We have always booked fully inclusive car hire in the past, but have just been quoted a price by Alamo online (with a company discount _ courtesy of DH employer) all insurance inclusive but no tank of fuel, it works out 19 days 7 seater minivan for £406. My question is roughly how much will we be charged for the petrol, just roughly.

cost per gallon (usa size ) at moment is $2.99.find out how may the tank holds :thumbsup2

just looked at a Chryssler minivan spec and it holds 20 gallons so cost $60.But the rental firms charge a little bit more for there fuel(alamo not that much more )so budget at least $70

You could just do what we do and fill the car up on the way to the airport. It works out cheaper, and you aren't worried about letting them have the gas (petrol ;) ) you've "paid" for.

Also, the price seems to keep rising. We're currently at $3.29 to $3.39 here in the Little Apple.

Just worked it out, if you were over in the UK it would cost $6.59 for a gallon of petrol!!!!:sad2:

I think i was about 21 when the prices were that low over here!!

Will you be adding any drivers to the alamo rental? If you are it is not a good deal. Only just worth doing without anymore drivers.
Just priced up 7 seater with Dollar for 6th Aug for 19 nights. Incl Platinum cover for Additional drivers and full tank of fuel £475 with Airline network.
Best thing about Dollar is even if there is an hour line at the desk if you have joined Dollar express and you go right to the front.
Have you used Alamo before? I had bad experience with Alamo like a few on here, but the majority think they are ok.
Whatever you do dont let the car rental company fill up the tank, stop as you are leaving to the airport and put in as much as you can.

Hi you have three options:
1. Ask to "pre-pay" the tank of gas when you pick up the car (you return the car as empty as you like)
2. Fill the car up on your way to return it at the airport (so you return the car full).
3. Return the car as it is - and pay for them to "fill it up for you".

The second option is the cheapest - since you pay pump prices (although be careful - I have heard that some petrol stations near the airport have inflated their prices to scam tourists who need to fill up and don't realise that they are being horrendously overcharged...). Obviously this is the most hassle option.

I really wouldn't recommend the third option - the rental companies charge a ridiculous amount for this (well $80/$90 to fill a $30/$40 tank). I don't like doing this on principle. The first option is the middle ground: very convenient, but you don't get charged as extortionately as if you went for the 3rd option.

We always gor for option 1 - we "pre-pay" the tank of gas. We find paying a little more for the "convenience" of not having to fill up on the way to the airport (or the expense if we forget to fill up :upsidedow ) is well worth it.

Hope that helps.

I wish we could find $2.99 at the moment! It's more like $3.28, more at some stations. The most expensive we saw was over $3.50.

took the price from the average given on orlando sentinal web site

now showing
On Saturday, the average price for a gallon of gas in Orlando is $3.02.

I don't remember what it was when I first started driving. But I do remember the lowest I've seen as an adult. It was in the spring of 1999 and it got to $.78 a gallon!! I still remember when it hit $2 a gallon. I thought that was outrageous!!!

For a current look at gas prices you can visit www.orlandogasprices.com and it will show you the lowest and highest in the Orlando metro area. (You'll see that I regularly post prices there.)

In the Disney area the gas stations on State Road 535 south of I-4, just over the border in Osceola County (Kissimmee) are usually very good. The three Hess stations on Disney property are also very fair and sometimes among the lowest.

In the Disney area there are also three stations on State Road 535 north of I-4 that are notorious for ripping tourists off. The worst is the Chevron on 535 right at I-4, further north is a Shell and 7-Eleven/Citgo. Avoid at all costs, please. They may be cheap by UK standards but are outrageous by local standards. There are also some stations off TOLL 528 (Beachline Expressway) near the Airport that are high.

You can normally jam a lot of gasoline into your rental car at cheaper prices near where you are staying and the needle will still show FULL when you return the car at or near the airport.

malibuconlee, when we moved from elsewhere in Florida to the Orlando area a few years ago many of the stations were below $.99/gallon. Thanks to George and his Texas oil buddies, we're now triple that. It's shameful!

I paid $2.99 today in the Orlando area.

Onsite at Disney is usually similar to what I pay in Seminole County.

There are 4.546 litres to the UK gallon but there are only 3.785 litres to the US gallon so $6.59 for the comparison price of a US gallon in the UK is correct.

I remember going to DL from Ohio in 1968 as a child of 12 years. WDW was still a dream and a construction site in a swamp. Gasoline was .32/gallon and it was really HIGH that year. I remember it as low as .19 a few years earlier. Four guys dressed in white with bow ties used to run out and wash your windows, check under the hood, and more. :rotfl: The year I started driving saw the 1973 embargo and gas prices almost doubled from .39 to .70 the week I got my license and we started odd/even day 6 gallon max rationing! Not to worry though, I was working at the local Sunoco(Hwy 9 Freehold, NJ) and got all I and my friends needed. :thumbsup2 ;)

The best prices we find on a regular basis are over on the S. Orange Blossom Trail, near Costco. They are often significanly lower than in the main tourist area.

But the main areas have some staggering prices right now.

Thanks for all the help, I will not be adding another driver as DH doesn't drive so as recommended I think that my best option is to get the petrol myself once out of the airport, or at least get enough to get me somewhere cheaper (if that makes any sense) thanks for your help.

How do you mean? Every hire car is supplied with a full tank of petrol.

Alice

Thats right it will be full when you collect it, then if you return it full they will not charge you anything.
