Roseanne back

Ah gotcha. I don't forsee a cancellation at this point so soon after it being announced of a renewal so I'm guessing she'd have to say something really really really bad for them to do that with how well received it was. I don't follow her on social media and whatnot so I wasn't quite certain exactly the things she had been saying but it's a good thing to hear that the show seems to be separate from all that.

I almost think they're putting the cart before the horse on this. The first episodes are always going to have high viewership, especially for reboots. The key is if viewership can be sustained long-term over the season. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they still cancel it after a season. I don't care one way or the other, because I won't be watching. However, it seems ABC can be flaky with their shows and renewing. We'll see, I guess.

I don't want to post it here, but it's a photo of her dressed as Adolf Hitler, pulling cookies shaped like people out of the oven.
Oh dear God. And I love political satire, the Onion etc. but this goes too far.

A photo in horrifically poor taste from a Jewish satirical magazine that ran 9 yrs ago. My husband is Jewish and I just showed it to him — he shrugged his shoulders and said Hollywood has done worse. Just one opinion. And while to me, it doesn’t change how offensive the photo is, some may not know that Roseanne is Jewish herself.

FWIW... Quote from the Jewish satirical publication, which is no longer in existence: “Heeb, however, defended the pictures and noted that Holocaust jokes are frequently featured in Hollywood movies, explaining that as a satirical, Jewish publication its goal was to challenge preconceptions:”

They obviously knew about this 9 year old photo when they renewed the show. I won’t start listing here all the insane and incredibly offensive things other celebs have done who still have careers in Hollywood.

The show may well get cancelled at some point but it won’t be because of this. When you look closely at the ratings breakdown, she appears to be recapturing part of an audience that left network sitcoms years ago. That’s why she’s being renewed. If she does new insane things and a group of people put up a big enough stink, maybe she will get canceled. Who knows?

I saw the pictures that you guys are talking about and heard it was for a Jewish satire magazine. As a previous poster said Roseanne is Jewish herself and was trying, according to her, to point out holocausts still happen every day. I personally don't get it and find it distasteful but I know that satire magazines are for stuff like that. Roseanne has always been crazy, has always done distasteful stuff, but I've always been able to separate her from the character because I did enjoy the show.

I only just got around to watching these first two episodes last night so I’m a few days behind most everyone else. I have to say, I enjoyed the new show more than I expected!

A few thoughts that found their way into my head while watching:

First, the political commentary (all of it) was, at first, disappointing to see. Lately, I tend to seek out video content that offers an escape from any and all political references. Realizing my expectations were probably unrealistic for this show, I continued watching. As the kitchen table scene progressed I, admittedly and regrettably, found myself falling into that familiar trap of scoring the verbal exchange between Roseanne and Jackie as if I were a judge sitting ringside at a boxing match - scoring punches thrown and punches landed. At some point though, and to my surprise, my punch-counting quickly faded away. I can’t say for sure exactly when it happened. Kind of like when you have hiccups.....then, all of sudden....you don’t. (Isn’t it funny how you never realize when your hiccups go away?).

This show, I think, has the potential to be really great. And maybe even do really great things for some of it’s viewers. Increasingly, “life” is defined by what is happening on the screens we watch - the screens we hold. The thin line that separates fiction and nonfiction is blurring more with each passing day. At the same time, and perhaps more alarming, the line that separates left and right is growing wider and more defined. Recently, it seems we’re being led to believe that straddling that line between left and right, with one foot on each side, is no longer an option. This show attempts to reject that notion. You CAN be both left and right. We can, and should, practice ambidexterity every chance we get. ABC took a huge risk with this show. Kudos to them for their doing it!

Oh! I almost forgot! DW is really hoping Booker Brooks makes a return to the show. If nothing else, she’d be happy with a brief cameo appearance. (Pfff. Whatever.:sad2:)

It made me sad to see them, like it was totally inexcusable.

I looked on Snopes to confirm and they said it was supposed to be satire and something about normalization and taking back the culture or something and yadda yadda. Personally, that isn't okay under any context, satire or not.
Also in the Snopes srticle, "These photographs are real. However, they are frequently shared without important accompanying context. The series of images were originally part of a 2009 article in a “Germany” issue of Heeb magazine, a satirical Jewish publication that ran between 2001 and 2010.
I didn't find Roseanne funny the first time so I don't plan on watching it this time around. I find the real life and character Roseanne to be crass and uninformed.
I'm curious, since you're not the first poster to say something like this. Do you all not partake (read, watch, purchase, etc.) anything produced by anyone whose beliefs/behaviors aren't 100% in accord with your own?

So, everyone who is saying what Roseanne did was satire, can you say the same for the Kathy Griffin photo? That was done as satire as well, according to her when it was first released.
Yup. Neither in good taste. Neither funny at all. Neither a great example of satire. :thumbsup2

One might be viewed as a threat to an individual, and one was actually published in a satirical publication, but yeah — both awful.

Of course not. But when those beliefs and behaviors cross a line for me I stop partaking in their "talent". for instance, I have not watched a Woody Allen movie since 1997.

For me, I do try to boycott people who do things I find highly offensive. For example you won't find me ever ever eating Jimmy Johns subs or Papa Johns pizza. I did watch Last Man Standing, even though I didn't agree with Mike's conservative views. He was open and mentioned them quite often, but I didn't feel he was beating me over the head with them.

I try not to support things I don't believe in but realize that isn't 100% possible. In this case it is very easy to do.

I do find it funny that Roseanne mocked football players taking a knee during the national anthem when she grabbed her crotch after singing it. The latter is light years more offensive IMO.

She also spat on the ground.

So why don't you eat Papa John's or Jimmy John's?

While I can totally get the discussion evolved I'm just hoping that come next weeks episode we can go back to discussing the show itself. I enjoyed hearing about the tidbits, easter eggs, nods, etc people discussed after the first 2 episodes. I don't want the nearly year old thread to get closed down :)
