What benefits do you get from rooting a nook color that you don't get from the nook color alone?

I'm researching this and it seems like it allows more apps to be available. Anything else?

Yes - once you root the nook color what you pretty much have is an Android Tablet. I've put Apps purchased from the Amazon App store and Google marketplace on there. I've put the Kindle Android App on there and downloaded Kindle books. I've been able to stream Netflix to it but I think I read Barnes and Noble was adding that to their own store now so that might not be an added benefit.

As you can see, the number of apps coming right from Barnes and Noble is fairly limited.

Which instructions did you use for rooting? I've seen many but am scared to turn my Nook Color into a brick. If you have and it's been working for a while....I'll probably do it. Did you put a 32gb card in or are you just using the Color as is?

I run my boot from the card so when I remove the sd card I just get stock nook color back. I used the instructions from the XDA forums for CM7. I have a couple of cards that I can boot from. I first used a 32GB but it kept freezing up and I'd have to reboot often. I switched to a 16GB - I think it is a class 6? - and I get much better performance from that one.

If you don't want to try the steps yourself, you can buy the boot cards from EBAY for a pretty reasonable price.

Thanks. I've been searching the Holiday deals for a 32 card. I saw one that was a class 10 super cheap but expired before I got to it! I'll check out Ebay and decide from there. I pretty good with the tech stuff but I am getting older and not as sharp as I used to be.

As a previous poster mentioned, you run the boot from the microSD card, so no chance of turning it into a brick! If it doesn't work out, you can force a reboot back to the Nook Color original operating system.

I've watched several youtube videos describing it, but haven't done it yet. I'm still waiting to receive the Nook Color.
