We are booked on the 9/7 Magic and have been assigned two adjoining rooms on level 5 that happen to be near the elevators. Has anyone had experience with this area of the ship? How bad is the "traffic noise" near the elevators? Thanks.
We've stayed in 7106, right near the aft elevators. No problem with elevator noise or traffic at all. I actually now prefer to be closer to the elevators/stairs. It's very convenient.
We have stayed in 8030 and 8530. Both rooms were next to the midship elevators and it was very convenient to be there. There was no noise at all from the elevators or the people waiting for them.
We have been near the elevators a couple of times over the course of our many voyages, and there has never been any noise. We've been by both the forward and the aft ones.

It might depend on whether you're a sound or light sleeper. I'm a light sleeper and even minor noise is enough to wake me. On our last cruise we were waitlisted for a category 6 stateroom. When the documents came, I learned that we were assigned stateroom 6530, our door in full view of the forward elevator lobby. I called the Cruise Line to ask for a different cabin about 4 times, but was told that all category 6's were booked and that they couldn't promise me a change. Sure enough, we were stuck with 6530 and I never got a decent night's sleep.
I used a travel agent to book our next two cruises and while I sat at her desk she checked out cabin #'s with me as she was on the phone making our reservation. We got cabins between elevator banks, and I'm experimenting with different kinds of ear plugs just in case!!
I was so tired at the end of our cruise (which was also after 5 days in the parks -- so I was REALLY tired) that I swore I'd never do a cruise again, but after getting home and getting some rest, I realized that we had a great time afterall and I can't wait to go again!!
We were by the aft elevators on our Feb 3rd cruise and we never heard any noise. It was also nice to just hop on the elevators when we needed to go somewhere.
Besides ear plugs, another suggestion is a white noise machine (a marriage saver for people like me who have snoring hubbies). I have a portable one that I always bring on the ship, as I have no trouble sleeping with white noise (or similar sounds, like engine vibration), but hallway sounds really bug me. That little thing is GREAT for ensuring a good night's sleep.

Are there airconditioners or fans in the rooms? I always use a fan for my white noise that I MUST have... it can be -10* here and I have my fan going. I've never heard a white noise machine... are they great and how much do they cost?
We got our white noise machines at the Sharper Image. I don't recall the cost, but it should be on their website. I think you can get them cheaper elsewhere, but I like the ones I got at SI. One is an "industrial" version for home that runs on either batteries of a cord. The other is a little travel-sized one that also incorporates a clock. They both have a variety of sounds to choose from, but the ones I use most are "Rain" or the old traditional white noise.

Wow, we were just around the corner from the mid-ship elevators (deck 6) and not only did I sleep the best I have in years - I actually came off the ship without the bags/circles under my eyes!
