Room Service @ the DVC

We never use room service when staying at a Disney hotel so I don't miss it when we stay DVC. In fact having the kitchen is what I love so much about DVC. Not that I'm spending all my time cooking, but it is nice to be able to put in a frozen pizza or a family dinner instead of waiting for room service. Not only is it cheaper, but it is usually hot as well. That's the one thing I always hated about room service - it never seemed hot by the time I got it.

We have always found WDW room service to be excellent.
We get room service all the time, we love it. To us it a fun and pampering part of vacation. We usually get 1 or 2 breakfasts and late night snacks, etc during each trip. We especially like the additional RS options offered at BWV with the boardwalk restaurants' menus being available. RS is of course more expensive because you are paying for additional service.

So if you stay at those other timeshares and order food in from another restaurant off site, you call that "room service", but if you order in from an off site restaurant to OKW it's NOT? I don't quite understand that logic. Our adult kids have ordered food in from restaurants outside of WDW and had it delivered to OKW with no trouble at all. Not sure what the difference is. Myself, I never use room service anywhere, so doesn't matter anyway.

I agree with Gail, it's a home away from home, and room service is about the same as there! If I want it, I order from one of the delivery services.

dianeschlicht - the other timeshares I have stayed at in Orlando - not to mention HH and Williamburg - had a list of the food deliveries in the area - their menu -

OKW only has their pizza delivery - and it is pretty bad.

they could easily do more - they just don't want off property coming to their resorts - since they refuse to have room service - they should at the very least have the restuarants that will delivery - be able to on WDW property - so far WDW/DVC has refused to do this.

I think in the last place either Marriott or Hilton there were around 30 restuarants that would deliver.

Spiceycat...I am not aware that Disney does not allow outside delivery. When we stayed at OKW in 2002, we had pizza (an outside pizza restaraunt) delivered to our OKW room. Is this a new rule?

okay I learned something new - great news - before when you order off-site the guard would stop them and you would have to either drive or walk (alot of trouble) all the way to the guard shack to pay the driver and get your food - if you had a car this was not problem - but if you didn't - this could be a big pain.

It was so bad - that the restuarants were asking me to wait at the guard shack....

Anyway it has been years since I have tried to order off-site for delivery to OKW - it is time to do it again.

THANKS!!!!!

Granted, this is true. But I didn't buy any ol' time share, I bought DVC knowing the super service at the resorts. I am very happy staying at BCV and BWV. We are staying at VWL the first time in Dec.

I just love room service! When I have choice of having it or not, I will be picking the resort that has it. That is one of the cool things about DVC. You have a variey to chose from. I hope it works out to have room service at SSR.

I have recently inherited 2 weeks thru Marriott and I know not to expect room service even at an ocean front at HHI. It certainly won't stop me from going, I'll just have to suffer!

and when you purchased at DVC, you knew there was no maid service or room service at ehe stand alone resorts. Why complain now?

We had chinese food delivered once when we were at OKW. We called the front desk, and the CM gave us a recommendation. We did not need to meet the delivery person at the guard station.

We appreciate room service some times for the kids. Stayed in BCV once with another family, ordered room service for all of the kids (including one old enough to be a babysitter), and adults walked over to Epcot for dinner. It was a lifesaver as the kids were too tired to go out.

We have never had an issue with delivery people getting in. DS usually calls someplace from the phone book in the room, and they must do it often enough, since they always find the room just fine.

I have yet to encounter the problem either and I have been a member since 92.

They do have telephone books in the rooms and who can blame them for not advertising their competitors? Most hotels that do advertise get compensated for it. With all the restaurants that Disney has on prem. why would they want to?

Who said anything about blaming them? I just pointed out the reason that they won't put together a package like other timeshares might is that they want people to eat in THEIR restaurants, not to order in.

Oh, and I love room service too. I would not have bought into DVC if OKW was the only resort in the system. We have stayed there a couple of times and one of the downsides was lack of room service. No, my regular home doesn't have room service but then again my regular home isn't walking distance to the boardwalk and MGM nor is it a short ride to MK, AK and downtown disney! Oh, and even though my regular home is a heck of a lot larger, it costs a lot less on a per day basis than even the least expensive DVC room.

Of course they want people to eat in their restaurants, it is part of their business. That is pretty much a no brainer.

We all purchased for different reasons. I am glad you can get room service. Personally, it is not something I care about, anywhere.

Locally here there is a company that does restaurant delivery to your door. We've done it. Room service at home is rather nice.

I've never done room service at Disney, but it is one of the things I like about the hotel attached DVC resorts over the stand alone ones. Knowing that if it pouring rain and I have a headache, someone will bring me an overpriced burger.

On our last trip home to BCV we brought along a babysitter for a few nights and she ordered room service on the nights we went out without the kids. She made mac 'n cheese and chicken nuggets for the kids but ordered burgers and sandwiches for herself. She said it was good. My only problem was that one of the trays was left outside our door for several days!!!!

I think room service is different than getting food delivered because it's all about the experience. Yes, you can get chinese or pizza and pour it out onto paper plates and have a quick cleanup but it's not the same as having a waiter show up at your door, spread a white table cloth out, set the table and remove the covers on the plates to reveal a perfectly plated restaurant meal. Room service is one of those ultimate in luxury things that we really really enjoy on vacation whereas we can get pizza and chinese delivered at home.

I know people like to say that DVC is a "home away from home" and seem to imply that it's somehow wrong to expect anything different than your real home. Honestly, to me, the home away from home aspects of the DVC program seem to be about added space and convenience over a regular hotel room rather than about placing limitations. Housekeeping can even be had for a price (though we find it unnecessary more often than we get it).

I see your point, totally. BTW, I NEVER eat off paper plates. When we do have food delivered it is put on the regular plates and served at the table. The dishwasher decoration works very well. :)

There is nothing wrong with expecting something different at your home away from home, I was just explaining why, at the stand alone DVC's, room service is not offered.

Yes, housekeeping can be had, for a price, but, I never use it.
I am a neat freak, so, it never gets messy. :)
