Room Only vs. Package

I know you can generally save money by booking room only, especially with a code. However, I was wondering if there was anyone out there who felt getting a package saves them money?

Im sure it all depends on when you go ect, but if anyone out there has an opinion on room only vs. package deals, I would love to hear them!!

TIA

Actually using a Canadian at Par Deal I got last year, the package turned out cheaper than buying everything separately. Mostly because Disney had sent their exchange rate at $0.72 and it was actually around $0.82 when it came through on my credit card.

I got POFQ for $1300 for 3 adults with UPH passes. I had booked an extra night using the code and it came to $100 with tax. So I got three 6 day UPH's for $266 each including tax. It was really worth it since we went to Disney Quest 3 times; Pleasure Island 2 times and my Dad hit the water park once.

Plus we got a $25 dining certificate for Planet Hollywood (which turned out to be the surprise hit of the trip) and 2 pins and lanyards.

The package definately ended up better for me.

Do you think with the DYW packages, it's all a better deal? Can you get a AAA rate (through AAA agent) for the Magic Your Way packages? (I know that you could with Dreammaker pkgs)

It seems like the dining would be a good deal-we spent a lot on food during our 12/04 trip.

We did a package the last visit. It was the gold plan for 8 days. It was not cheap, but after we got home and crunched some numbers we were at about $80 a day for WL. However we took great advantage of the things that went with the package. We did alot of water craft rentals, and we ate like pigs. we DO think it was worth it.

We are doing the MYW with Dining this year so we bought the package. I did get the discount through AAA, but If I did everything separate I might get a code when it gets closer and it would be cheaper doing everything separate.

However, we are doing the package becuase I really really want to do the dining. I am the type of person who constantly looks at the bill, and is trying to order the cheap item on the menu to save a few bucks. We also usually only eat one table service meal all week, becuase I just can't justify the price of the sit downs.

So with the dining option, I get to order whatever I want and not be thinking about the bill as well as eat many more sit down restaurants! By knowing what I have to budget for now, I have 8 months to pay off our trip, and then ENJOY IT without worrying about all the room charges!

I just switched my room only to a package after waiting and waiting for codes. Finally, we are just a month out and there are no codes so I called and made the change. The dining plan is definately worth it for our disney eating habits but I didn't want to do it if it meant giving up a really good room discount. However, since we aren't getting a discount our package is saving us money (on food).

Thanks for the good tips everyone. :goodvibes If you weren't getting the dining package, would you still get the MYW package without dining?

I am thinking of doing the dining, b/c then I could eat all I wanted. I am also one of those people who worrys about spending too much on food so this would give me the opportunity to eat at places I normally wouldn't. :flower:

Is it pretty safe to say that your probably going to pay a bit more per night at the hotel using the package rather than room-only?

Thanks!

Here's my 2 cents worth. I'll preface it by saying I am a Disney specialist travel agent and this is what I recommend for my clients.

Right now, with the MYW plan a package and tickets and room booked separately should be the same price. With the old packages you had to get UPH tickets and for people who didn't go to water parks or Disney quest or who arrived at 8 PM and checked out at 10 am they were paying for lots of stuff they wouldn't use. That isn't the case now with MYW. The package price will be the same as room only and tickets bought through Disney *unless you have a room only code of course. You could save some by buying your tickets from a broker but if you are talking buying through Disney, there shouldn't be a difference now (if you do a quote online and it's $90 more for a package, that is the cost for the optional insurance).

ALWAYS start with room only, even if you are pretty sure you want a package. (I will of course honor a clients wishes if they don't want to go this route).

The reason is that it gives me MUCH more flexibility in finding my client discounts. The cancellation and change policies are SO much better with room only. If you start with a package you must pay your final balance off at 45 days before arrival. Say you book the Poly for 7 nights and you are getting 7 day MYW tickets with park hopping. Now lets say they release AP codes at 44 days before you arrive with $100 off per night at deluxe resorts. With the AP codes you would save $597.32 by buying 1 AP and using the room only code. Since you booked a package, we have to cancel your reservation and rebook room only. Since you are less than 45 days out you are hit with a $100 cancellation fee. You are still $497.32 ahead but can you think of better ways to spend that $100? Now a different scenario...they decide at 30 days before your arrival to release general public codes. They offer them on pacakge deals so you want to apply the code. There is a $50 fee for any change to your package reservation that changes the price after 45 days out. So you essentially lose $50. With a room only booking in either scenario we apply the code and you have no penalty fees. We can convert you from a room only booking to a package booking with one quick easy phone call and we can do it right up untill 5 days before you leave. So if you budget for the package we know it won't be MORE than that price (unless ticket prices go up which we don't expect any time soon since this pricing structure is new). If no better deals come out a week or two before you travel, we call and convert you to a package with no change fees. You have to pay the full balance at that time but you held on to that money all that extra time rather than letting Disney hold on to it.

If you don't have a room only discount code then good use of the dining plan does get you some discount but don't lock yourself in to a package before you have to.

I hope that made sense! I'll go ahead and say that I *do not* recommend this because of something like me making better commission on a room only booking. The commission is better on a package. I recommend it b/c I honestly feel it is better for the client. It's more flexible and allows us to keep our discount options open for as long as possible. :)

Wow, that is GREAT information. Thank you so much for writing all of that. :wizard: I really, really appreciate it.
