Room keys to get on the poly beach?

I remember a while back someone saying that they were checking room keys to get on the poly beach to watch the fireworks.... Was that just for a busy time...4th of July or new Years? Or can anyone get on the beach to watch fireworks? This is one of our favorite things to do...eat at Kona, go to the beach and watch fireworks while kids play in the sand. I will think about changing our Kona reservation if we can't get out on the beach.

The last time I visited, December 2011, they were not checking resort keys in order to get on the Poly beach. My girlfriend loved watching Wishes from there because we were able to escape the crowds a bit. If they have changed this I will be very sad.

I watched the MNSSHP fireworks from the Poly beach in October and they were not checking room keys.

For NYE they had an area directly on the sand in front of the pool that was for resort guests only. The rest of the beach (it's long and wide), the marina area, the sidewalks, the grassy areas and Sunset Pointe were open to anyone. I have only encountered this on NYE (probably December 30 also). They might expand it to July 3/4. I would not at all be concerned about any other dates and will continue to go for the 4th and NYE as my preferred viewing spot from the Poly would not be in the sand anyway.
