Room Charge at Disney

I wasn't sure where to put this but I think that it is kind of a budget question.

My understanding from reading somewhere is that the value hotels have a $500 room charge limit. How does that work exactly? Do they put a hold on the $500 at the beginning of the stay or do they charge it when you check out or reach $500?

I think that I would like to use the room charge for the convenience but I want to find out the details before I check in so I can decide if we should do that or just pay with our debit card as we go.

Thanks!

They don't charge you until you check out, they just run the card to make sure it has available funds, I always use my debit card, but I also alway's have plenty of available funds, so I never noticed if they put a hold on or not, what I can tell you is after our febuary vacation I was home almost 2 weeks before my charges came through. :goodvibes

Disney will do a "0" charge to your credit card account to verify that the account is active. They will not place any kind of hold on your funds in that account. But, they will put the charge through when your outstanding balance goes over $500 (or $1000 at a moderate, $3000 at a deluxe).

So, let's say that you hit that $500 limit on your 3rd day there. Disney will put the charge through for the balance owed and then you will start again at a "0" balance. If you don't want the charge to be put through on your CC, you can go to the front desk at any time prior to reaching that $500 limit and pay it off using cash, Disney Dollars, a gift card, traveler's cheques or your debit card.

If you use a debit card to guarantee room charges, the scenario is the same.

I will be taking my scout troop next weekend and all 3 rooms will have my charge card for incidentals. How do they do that? I wasn't aware there was a $500 limit at the values. Our dinner at Chef Mickey alone will be more than $500. Am I better to just use my credit card and not mess with the room in that case?

We were there in October and somehow we missed the info about $500. On the third day, we tried to use the key to the world card and it was denied. When we arrived back at the hotel, we asked and they said you could only have $500, but they would put through the charges and we could begin using it again. I thought that they said you could ask for a higher amount, but I'm not sure.....?

I would probably just use the CC for the restaurant charges rather than use the room charge. It would just make it easier than worrying about a credit limit on the room account. Save the room charging privileges for your souvenir purchases instead.

BTW, you do not have to have charging privileges for the other rooms. In fact, I would not have them if there are kids in those rooms who may not exercise restraint and responsibility.

I have 2 other chaperones going with us and we may not all be together the whole time. I was going to put room charging privileges on the room so that if we were split up, then one of the other chaperones could charge something to the room for the girls if I'm not there. This way, they do not incur any out of pocket and I am the only one that needs to be reimbursed from the troop account when we return. Anyone know of a better way?

Please don't use your debit card as you go...there have been many guest that have had their cards information taken by using one of those skimmers.

While they can take your credit card information just as easy, the aftermath between having a CC replaced as opposed to your checking account with all the money you had in it gone is a big difference.

My sister used her debit card twice last year while staying at Disney and someone in Mexico started withdrawing money from her account, before we returned home.

I purchase the Disney Gift Card to use while I'm shopping at Disney now.
