It's always best to have it noted on your original reservation. If you do plan to follow up with the resort a few days prior to your arrival, you want to make sure that when you call, you are in fact talking to someone at the resort. Even direct numbers are going through a call center, so there's no guarantee that you are even speaking with someone on location. It's just as likely that you are back with customer service who is doing nothing more than verifying it's on your reservation. There are no public e-mail addresses for any of the resorts, but the Allears site does have a list of fax numbers. Again, I'd do this only as a backup, as there's no guarantee that all faxed room requests are looked at.
