My DS and I are going to our first disney trip and he thinks I need to ride space mountain. I think it would be cool to ride Big thunder mountain RR, bit I am a big wuss!!

Will I survive riding these two rides?

I have not been on Space mountain yet but I am considering it. I have been on BTMR 2x (about 10 years apart) and I did not like it. It was very jerky and my head and neck were sore for about an hour after that. I am a roller coaster wuss!

I guess it just depends. I love BTMR more than RNR & space mt. DD likes space mt best. DH doesn't care. BTMR roughs you up more wooden roller coaster type ride. Space mt theming doesn't appeal to me - it was just okay for me.

Take it from me, a HUGE roller coaster wuss. I have been tricked so many times by my family saying "don't worry Lauren, it's not a big drop" or "no, it doesn't go too fast" and of course there is always a big drop and it goes too fast. BUT all these times, I have found myself enjoying the rides. Big Thunder Mountain is not bad AT ALL its actually very fun. I say go on, if I can do it, anyone can ::MinnieMo

I Have yet to ride Space Mountain so I cant really comment on it, but on my upcoming trip ( July 3!!!!) I plan on riding it for the first time. My sister assures me its fine so I'm going on :cool1:

I never rode roller coasters until WDW....I am definitely a huge roller coaster wuss too. I even hated anything with a big drop. However, I have decided I want to ride everything at WDW and so I have now done Space Mntn, BTMR, Splash Mntn, ToT, RnRCoaster, Mission Space....you name it. Here's the info on these....Space Mntn is pretty cool...it tends to get boring for me, I don't like doing it much cause I dont' like roller coasters, but DH tends to get me on there 2-3 times trip....blah. By the 3rd time I'm dreading it again. But, it's basically fast...there aren't too many huge drops, you just feel like you have to duck alot (even though you don't) to avoid the stars, etc. I don't think it will bother you much. Sometimes it seems rougher than others, and those times might bother you more....the last time I rode it, it sucked cause it was really jerky feeling and so it was not fun at all. (I claim it's the right/left side theory although supposedly they are the same...blah blah blah...left side is always consistently less jerky and more fun IMO). BTMR is one of my favorite rides! It has no really big drops, just fast curves. It's lots of fun...if you are really worried about the drops, dont' sit in the front so you don't see them coming the same way. Of course, I guess the no big drops is relative, so I'm sorry if you feel they are big when I said they weren't, but after Splash Mountain and ToT, they feel pretty nice and tiny. :) Now...if you are ever thinking about riding the other big scary rides, I'll tell you more and what not to ride (Mission Space :) ), but I think you will probably be okay on these 2, especially BTMR.

I guess it depends on WHY you're a roller coaster wuss.

I, too, dislike coasters. My reason is that I HATE heights. THe speed doesn't bother me (actually, the faster the better for me).

So, figure this out. I can NOT go on Astro Orbiter. The only way I can do ToT is with my eyes closed (so I can't see out when the doors open).

I LOVE RnRC, even the loops. I love Space Mountain. I think I enjoy these because it's so dark and I can't see how high I am. I love BTMRR, ESPECIALLY at night.

For you, Space Mountain might be a little difficult, because you really can't see anything and all the turns and drops are a complete surprise. You can't "prepare" for things. But, no loops, if that matters to you. It's really not that fast, but seems faster because of the darkness and the lighting special effects.

BTMRR, on the other hand, IMHO is pretty tame. No really big drops and no loops. It's a little fast, but not too bad - a little "jerky", though. At night, when it's dark out and the ride is lit up - awesome theming and experience. During the day, it's OK, but at night, it really "pops".

In either event, if you decide to ride either or... here's a tip. There are going to be HUGE lines. Be prepared. I'd recommend (if you'll be at MK at opening), jump on the train and head straight back to Frontierland. MOST people run straight to Tomorrowland, so Space Mountain will have a wait first thing. You SHOULD be able to jump on BTMRR with less than a 5 minute wait. You might also want to grab a fast pass first, in case you want to ride again. If not, just give the FP away - you'll become instantly popular! Then, do your thing and head over to Tomorrowland and grab a fastpass for SM, which will probably have a 30-45 minute wait by this point. While you're waiting, if you're still not sure, hop on the TTA which takes you through Space Mountain, and you'll sort of see what you're in for.

Good luck and have fun!!!

I am happy to say that I have tried all of the coasters at WDW and have survived them all. Space mountain is not as jerky as BTM but it is totally in the dark - so you don't see what's coming. I really enjoy the Rockn' Rollercoaster. The lights, music and initial takeoff are just the best. I don't, and probably never will, try roller coasters outside WDW. I guess there's a comfort factor there for me and I give it all a try. I've even tried Mission Space - despite slight claustrophobia - I survived that too. The only ride I wouldn't go on again is the Primeval Whirl in AK. I swear I got whiplash from that!! I should say that we rode it in the pouring rain and slid all over the seats making it worse. Go ahead and try it once - if you don't like it, don't do it again. But at least you'll know! Hope you have a wonderful time!

I was tricked into riding BTMRR on an E-ride night once. I used to do coasters when I was a teen. I don't do heights, but I did Splash once and lived, closed my eyes. I also don't like that feeling in the pit of my stomach. Anyway...BTMRR...I knew I was in trouble when a gentleman standing in line motioned for me to put my hat on backwards and tight. Then we started going up,up,up and I could see the stars (which were nice) and I started yelling at my sister "You know I hate heights!" And the wild ride started with me saying words that make my 10 yr old nephew laugh still...4yrs later. (I am ashamed of myself for being such a big baby and for saying such words in front of my nephew, I don't normally say words like that! He was quite shocked to hear those words coming from Aunt Lori.) My head was buried in my friend's arm (we later became more than friends and are celebrating our 4th anniversary in August) and once I got off the ride my legs were like Jello. I MIGHT ride it again in the daylight, but I don't know. I would have to have duct tape for my mouth or something probably. But I would encourage anyone who doesn't develop situational potty mouth to give it a try!

Ride BTMRR but not Space Mountain.

Space Mountain is really rough and there is nothing cool about it.

BTMRR is very smooth and very well themed. One of my favorite attarctions.

Dont forget Rock & Roler Coaster. Very smooth, fast and entertaining.

sunny04 - as a self designate "queen of the rollercoaster wusses", I hearby proclaim that you must turn in your rollercoaster wuss card as you are no longer deemed worthy of carrying this card. You stated, and I quote:
I am definitely a huge roller coaster wuss too
, but then you let the truth out as you stated:
so I have now done Space Mntn, BTMR, Splash Mntn, ToT, RnRCoaster, Mission Space....you name it.
and further bragged:
Space Mntn is pretty cool...it tends to get boring for me
. These statements place you on the verge of being a rollercoaster junkie - not a wuss! Congratulations for you bravery. ;) :teeth: :rotfl:

mist_e_rose2002 - now to answer your question, again I am the self-appointed queen of the wusses so I know what I'm talking about. ;) I agree with what rayelias said - it depends on why you don't like rollercoasters. I love height, love to go fast, don't mind going around, but I HATE DROPS and "losing" my stomach. I rode Space Mtn when I was a teen and "survived" then, but will not ride it now with my children. The drops are not horrible, but it's jerky and I don't like not knowing what's coming. I did ride RnR once and will never again because I lost my stomach on the takeoff and it took me forever to find it. ;) I've never braved Splash Mtn, as I can see what the drop is. But BTMRR is my favorite ride in the park, maybe in all the parks. I can ride it over and over again. It goes fast, it goes around curves, but there are no big drops. I love it! Especially at night as a previous poster said. Good luck and have fun! :flower:

Another Roller Coaster wuss here....
I agree with the previous posters who said it depends on why you don't like them. For me it is the drops. I can spin and go fast, but I'm here to tell you that the Norway ride, Pirates of the Caribbean and Kali River Rapids are about the extent of what I can handle for drops!! After sending my 2 sons on BTMRR the last time (they were just recently coming out of "wuss" stage into the "brave enough to try new things" stage), I decided to take their advice and ride BTMRR. I am glad I did - it was very fun! No drops - just fast and a lot of curves. So if it is drops that bother you, I would say you could do BTMRR.

Now if I could just convince myself to ride Splash Mt!!.......

DON'T ride this one as a roller coaster wuss....it goes upside down and is NOT smooth to people who don't like roller coasters....still claiming myself as being one of these people. ;) (I only ride these rides because DH makes me...I didn't say I liked them, except for BTMR...the rest I pretty much dread each trip, but they don't bother me....they don't make me sick or anything.)

We rode Space Mountain, Splash Mountain and Thunder Canyon and got off all of them thinking "that was it". If you have ever been to a Six Flags type theme park, the rides at Disney are no where near as "thrilling" as those types of roller coasters.

Totally agree with Luv2Travel--BTMRR is a lot of fun for me because there are no sudden drops. I also love the theming--wish it went slower around the piggies! I rode SM once this trip, and probably won't ever do it again because I can't see what's coming and there are some drops. Good luck!

I'm not a big rollercoaster fan, but I did enjoy BTMRR when I rode it a few years ago. It is fast and a little jerky at times, but it slowed down at times, so it wasn't so bad.

I rode Space Mountain for the first time in Dec and hated it. I sat in the last seat of the ride (4 seats per vehicle) and everyone later told me this is the worst place to sit. My head jerked so much that I left with a headache.

If you're in the mood to try both when you get there, go for it, but try not to get the last seat in the Space Mountain vehicle and hold on to your sunglasses on BTMRR! :tilt:
