On a previous thread, Saffron predicted that the 1st bird would leave the nest Wednesday, and the rest would leave on Thursday. So far, so good, Maggie! ;)

This morning I opened the door to the porch and what should greet my eyes but THIS --
<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Morning-Greeting.jpg">

I was ecstatic! I went tearing upstairs to get my DH!! And then flew back downstairs to capture this momentous occasion on film! :) :) :)

This little guy is adorable, isn't he!!!!

I managed to take a little movie of him, too, but I need my DH's help in posting that... so for now we just have "still shots" ;)

Mom and Dad are so protective. Notice how they are looking in different directions -- contantly "keeping an eye out"!
<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Mom,-Dad,-%26-Baby.jpg">

A little while later, they managed to encourage the fledgling to hop his way into "cover"... Can you see him? ;)
<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Camouflage-1.jpg">

Here he is!
<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Camouflage-2.jpg">

I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to see him make his "big jump", but I'm excited that I did get to see him before his parents hid him in safer terrain. I had an appointment this morning, and by the time I returned home, I could no longer find the little guy. :( Sigh. Well, at least there are still three more in the nest, and I suspect they're thrilled to have some extra room to nap in! ;) Of course, I'm sure they'll be leaving soon, too. (sniff, sniff :()

<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Nest-1-8-6.jpg">

And that's the "end" for now, folks! ;)

It's so interesting watching these birds grow up. If you have any birds in the nest by tomorrow, I will be surprised.

I hope he can get up off the ground soon! Have you seen him actually fly yet?

I am so happy for the little guy I was about to cry!!! LOL!!

AGain thanks so much for posting these... It truly makes my morning.

I went out looking for the little guy a few minutes ago and finally found him a few feet from the street! :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:! I about had a heart attack. I've read that it is TOTALLY safe for people to pick up birds when necessary (the parents will NOT reject him/her), so I scooped him up and carried him back to my porch.

My DH was able to snap a quick pic of the little one in my hand! :)
Thus the name of the picture: "A Bird in the Hand" ;) ;)
<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/A-Bird-In-the-Hand.jpg">

No, I haven't seen him fly yet. From what I've read he won't be able to fly for 2-3 days. But he sure does hop around quickly!!! :)

Oh gosh...the little "guy" on the ground. {sentimental tears of joy} :D

What an exciting moment! Thanks Kara! :) :) :)

What a great thread! I've enjoyed your little bird postings soooo much!:) :sunny:

Oh my gosh, just too cute. :D

So glad you rescued him from going into the street.

Thanks again for the pictures.

Kara, What would happen if you placed him back in the nest?

TC:cool:

I've read on the web that if you try to put a fledgling back in a nest, it will immediately hop back out! :)

Awwww! So cute!

We used to get baby birdies on the ground a lot during the spring, but since we have a big dog, we'd get really worried when that happened. Supposedly if you touch them, the mommy bird will abandon them. poor things.

Oh Kara! *sniff, sniff* (I am so glad I'm not the only one with tears in my eyes. LOL!!) How woderful that you got to see him leave the nest!!! That's a special gift for you for all the love and care you showed for them over the last few weeks. How cool that you got to hold him too!!! Heehee! He looks like "Grumpy" to me. :teeth:

And Kara --- I love the last picture in your original post! That is just absolutley precious!!!

Are you going to show your students these pictures?? How about the other teachers? LOL!!! They are fantastic pictures Kara and this series is like the icing on the cake. Thank you for sharing with us. I've enjoyed every picture and every update. :) :) :)

Oh my gosh, jfulcer! That is too funny! Nice job spotting that! :)

Angiebelle -- It is a myth that touching baby BIRDS means the parents will abandon them. Other kinds of animals, yes, but not birds. This is due to the fact that birds have such a poor sense of smell.

The Audubon Society states from their site, and I quote:

"Mother birds DO NOT abandon their babies if people touch them! Birds CANNOT smell human scent!"

Here's the link, if you'd like to read more:

Haha jfulcer!

Awww, Kara! Baby birdies on the sidewalk and hidden Mickey's on the lawn. Life if good. :)

Again, Kara, thanks for sharing your little tempoary family wit hall of us here. VERY neat pictures!!! :bounce: Thanks.
