BCV contracts have taken quite the rollercoaster ride from pre Covid to Covid to revenge travel to this inflationary period. You wouldn't happen to remember if that contract was stripped do you?
No way to know; it was one I found in the OC database when I was looking for proof that the BCV contract Redweek.com had listed for $61/point and claimed they’d already sold when I made a full price offer really existed.

I’m still sad about that one because it was during the period when Disney was ROFRing *nothing* - you could have sold a contract for a dollar and it would have passed. I’d been regularly checking Redweek but stopped because nothing was ever popping up, and then I missed the deal of the century.

61 in 2020 is basically free in my eyes lol. Wow that would've been quite the catch.

first DVC contract and so excited
Congrats! Good pricing but just making sure you know that you really have no points until Dec 1, 2025-Nov 30, 2026… unless you borrow into the 2024 UY, which would let you book stays starting Dec 1, 2024.

My first purchase was stripped. I was focusing on price pp too much.

It worked out because it was poly so value went up and excited about new tower but knowing what I know now, I’d look for a loaded contract.

I think the most important thing when it comes to adding on, in any form, is to have a longterm plan for the points. Map out a few years and make sure adding on these ##-#### points means you're getting the stays you want and not needing unplanned points or ending up with unused points.

Stripped contracts can be great for this. Our recent BCV add-on was fairly stripped and will give us the exact longterm plan we were hoping for.

With a loaded contract, you also need to have a plan for the short-term points. And hopefully that short-term plan doesn't poison the longterm well.

If you're buying a contract to stay in Studios in your longterm plan, using your short-term points on a 1BR+ has a chance to poison the well and lead to either A) addonitis or B) longterm dissatisfaction with having points for 'just' Studios. Studios are awesome and the best deal in DVC.

Even worse is winging it. Like me right now.

I admit I'm in this situation right now with a loaded CCV contract waiting for ROFR. It has 220 points that will expire before my first trip in our longterm plan and I don't have a concrete short-term plan. During the buying process it was a "I'll figure it out later" problem that was discounted because the contract size was fairly uncommon but exactly what we needed for our longterm plan (220pts when 220-230pts was the goldilocks zone).

I can whittle the 220pts down to 115 unused points with some points shuffling of a trip that will have 7m availability, but we don't have the flexibility to travel more before these points expire, are otherwise traveling at times with limited 7m availability, already have 'ideal' reservations booked at 11m, and we don't rent out. So I'm left with some less-than-ideal options:
  • Lose the points
  • Gift a stay to a friend -- normally a great idea but the primary friend we're thinking of has a family size that won't fit into a CCV Studio/1BR and 115-220pts might not be enough for a 2BR (and their only trip before our points expire might not have anything else available at 7m)
  • Hope for availability at a Bungalow on a specific night of interest
    • We don't do 1-night stays in Cabungalows/GVs as it's a terrible value in terms of pts/hr, but I'm willing to consider it only because I have points to burn and only for this one particular night (and we're already staying in a Poly Studio that night)
  • Add 'ready in the morning' pre-arrival night(s) to existing stay(s), if available, so we have a room to go to straight from the redeye flight
    • Unlikely to be bookable for most stays considering 7m availability
    • Normally we drop off our bags and hit the parks and have a great day, though we have done the 'ready in the morning' room once before and it was nice to get settled then go to the parks
  • Re-arrange a yet-to-be-booked stay into a split-stay, something we don't really want to do and will have its own longterm risk of unused points

first DVC contract and so excited
I’m excited for you to get your first contract but there are a lot of cheap SSR contracts available that have 2024 points and you are still in your 10 day cancellation window so I would recommend you cancel this one and make offers on more contracts that have 2024 points. There are even contracts with banked 2023 points as well. In your offers you can ask for the seller to cover the 2024 dues which many owners will since 2024 is almost 3/4 over. Even if they’ll only agree to split the dues or won’t cover them at all, you will still get a better value by getting 2024 points at the cost of just $8 per point.

Hope I’m not bursting your bubble but I insanely overpaid for my very first DVC contract and wish someone would have guided me to cancel it and get something better. I still don’t regret it because it got my foot in the door with DVC so I’m sure you will be happy even if you decide to stick with the contract you already chose but I definitely recommend you try for a contract that’s not stripped.

Um yeah hello me! We are shopping for an additional contract for one of our UY because we stayed in a 1bed during Memorial Day weekend because that what was available when I was stalking the week before. Expensive trip for sure!

Thought we would maybe use those points on a studio each May.😂

As usual, well thought out @ehh but to me the shortest and easiest answer is to rent out the points. I realize you said you don’t, but for me that would be the only answer for unusable points!
I get it, renting is what I would also recommend to anyone in my situation.

Unfortunately, renting to someone I haven't personally traveled with is pretty much a non-negotiable non-option for me. And that list is pretty short and mostly people I would simply gift a stay to. And I've already gone through the list and most of their situations are such that they wouldn't be able to use the points before expiration either, even for free.

What is your reasoning for not wanting to rent out points to people you don’t know personally? Is it concern about the risk or complexity of the process, or perhaps a more idiosyncratic reason? Don't mean to question your resolve, but just curious as to why you want to avoid such a common usage of the system.

FWIW, I have used the board sponsor and https://dvcrequest.com/ and they have both been extremely easy experiences.

It would be nice if there was a charitable option for unused points of this nature. I understand hotel accomodations are a small part of the cost of a Disney trip but it would be nice for everyone to have the option to donate points and give a struggling family the trip of their dreams.

Rent the points and donate the money to a charity…..

First time DVC owners! Very excited! Curious how long closing will take. I'll keep the thread posted. I was contacted by the title company the same day it passed so fingers crossed it's a quick close
