Rock'N'Roller Coaster incident over the summer

A friend of my daughters was training at RnR that day and was there. He was really shook. Everyone did what they were supposed to and the boy died anyway. It was really sad.

"As noted by the heart consultant, this is often an asymptomatic condition, with sudden death as the first presentation of the disease," Irrgang wrote in her report.
_____________

Sudden death is the first presentation of the the disease? - Wow, pretty scary! So sad for the family. :guilty:

OMG............I just read that. My daughter has that EXACT same defect. We just got home from WDW, and she rode RNR 6 times in one day. I had talked to her cardiologist before we left. He said that she could ride any ride there except Mission Space. Seems strange that this defect was not diagnosed earlier in his life, as my daughter was diagnosed at two months of age (she's 10 now). It's usually first detected by the hearing of a heart murmur and then confirmed by echocardiogram.

I am very sorry that your daughter has that defect, BusyMomto3. All the best to you.

Maybe there's different cases, or levels of severity?

I hope all is well with your daughter, BusyMomto3.

Hey Disney Junky, what's the name of your daughter's friend? I'm sure my daughter would know who he is. She was training at Coaster that day too (actually having her evaluation), pretty hard to deal with when you've only been away from home for a couple of weeks and just learning the ropes.

We were at the park that day. The night before I didn't get a chance to go on RnR, so I planned for the next day. But it was closed for some reason, and it wasn't explained. I figured it was for maintenance. Later on our way home, we found out what happened. The family was in the Army, and it was just so tragic. I guess they don't let things like that slip out into the open at the park so everyone continues on their merry way trying to get on this ride or that. I will always remember that June/July trip and think of the heat, long lines, and especially that poor boy. Hmph.

We were at the park that day also. DS & I went there in the late afternoon and then stayed for dinner/shows, etc.. A friend from my local Disney group called me and spoke to me on my cell to tell me about what happened, all we knew is that the ride was closed and that we saw a large number of red helicopters that day but never put the 2 together until her call.

My heart goes out to that family, I cannot imagine what they are going thru!

Best of luck to your DD BusyMom!

I have a heart valve problem that's very similar to your DD's. Mine wasn't diagnosed until 5 years ago, when I was 43. Your DD had a murmur that could be heard so she was not as asymptomatic as say this boy or me,so it makes sense that he was never diagnosed.

There was also another incident on the ride recently:

Disney officials closed the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney-MGM Studios on Wednesday after a rider fell ill... A Disney spokeswoman said a 59-year-old man got sick about three hours after riding the roller coaster with family members." (Source: wesh.com, 10/05/06)
