I'm planning on getting in my car this year and taking a road trip once spring or early summer rolls around. BUT- I can't figure out where to go!:rotfl: I live on the East Coast and want to take an 8-10 day road trip. So either North, South or West is where I'll be going. Since everyone here is from all over I figure you guys have some great ideas on where to visit or places your family enjoys visiting. I plan on packing my bike and hopefully finding some great places to use that but that's not a requirement of the area. Basically I love beach towns, places with great architecture, museums, Parks and walkable mid size cities.:lovestruc

Does anyone have any recommendations on places to visit ? I'm considering places in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri,Iowa,Minnesota,Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. If i go further North I'll go during the summer time.

Can´t really help but am looking forward to the replies you´ll get. I love road trips and have gone on many in the US and Europe. We did a trip from NYC to Orlando once with a stay in DC on the way.Now I´m in the planning stages for a 3-6 week road trip in Europe in June/July.

Here's a couple ideas!

Charleston,SC to Hilton Head Island to Savannah, GA.

Hilton Head is awesome with bike paths all over the place and gorgeous beaches.

Or...
Newport, RI, Block Island, Boston, Kennebunkport, Me to Boothbay Harbor, ME

Or...

Vermont...Up Route 91, Stowe, Vt and end in Montreal.

Or...
Lancaster County, PA to Wahington, DC

Or..

Washington DC then Williamsburg, VA to Virginia Beach to the Outer Banks of NC.

Or...the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Beautiful lakes and Vkneyards.

Or...the North Fork of Long Island and on to Montauk?

Can you tell I LOVE to travel?

Happy planning wherever you go!

Last summer, we took a roadtrip up to New England (we live in Northern VA). As we headed north, we stopped in Scranton, PA to visit the Steamtown National Historic Site http://www.nps.gov/stea/index.htm
Then we continued on our way and spent the night in a hotel in CT.

The next morning we woke up and headed towards Maine. Along the way, we stopped in Plymouth, MA and visited the Mayflower and Plimoth Planation http://www.plimoth.org/...then continued on to Maine and spent the night in a hotel near Auburn.

The next day we went to Acadia National Park in Maine. http://www.nps.gov/acad/index.htm We camped, but there are hotels on MDI, especially Bar Harbor area. While in Acadia National Park we hiked, played at the sand beach, explored, took part in some of the ranger programs...it was great! I had no idea how wonderful it was and wished I had planned for more days there!

After a few days there we headed down to Massachusetts. We stayed at a hotel for two nights (it was so nice to be able to shower and stay in real beds!!! :thumbsup2) and spent some time seeing the "Freedom Trail" in Boston.

On our way out of Boston we stopped and visited Minuteman historical park in Concord/Lexington http://www.nps.gov/mima/index.htm

After that we spent a few days in Vermont. We went sailing on Lake Champlain, visited lots of the product factories of VT (Ben and Jerrys, Cabot Cheese, Maple syrup farms, etc.) and Quechee Gorge in VT. We stayed in a very rustic (no plumbing, just one room, etc.) cabin in one of Vermont's State Parks. I was impressed by how clean the restrooms were in Vermont's state parks! We camp frequently and these were by far the cleanest, nicest restrooms I've seen---plus the cost for showers were VERY reasonable--50 cents for 5 minutes! I think the place outside of Acadia was charging $2 for 4 minutes!

Then we headed home, on the way we stopped at Saratoga national Historical Park http://www.nps.gov/sara/index.htm

Altogether, it took us nearly 2 weeks...I think I easily could have spent 2 weeks just exploring Acadia and the surrounding area...but I couldn't have camped for 2 weeks!

A few years ago we did a trip that included Pennsylvania, D.C. and Virginia.

In western Pennsylvania you have a lot of mountainous areas and great biking, as well As Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater(an excellent guided tour). Heading east you have Gettysburg - another great area to bike the sites. We also stopped at Hershey, Pennsylvania. I always stop for chocolate.

In D.C. you have the National Mall - so you have great architecture and great biking all in one.

In Virginia, we visited Colonial Williamsburg and Mount Vernon - both locations feature great colonial architecture.

I vote Maine , New Hampshire, Vermont. Might be too much in 8 days and doing biking. Maine would be a great biking state-Acadia, the coast...fun!!

When we drove home from a wedding in Rochester we ended up in the finger lakes region of NY and one of the Northern most sections of one of the lakes was absolutely beautiful. I think it was the Skaneatles one, the town at the tip was charming and appeared set up for sightseeing pedestrians. Very nice.

From Delaware you can take the Cape May Lewes ferry with your car and get dropped off in Cape May. Also in NJ the New Hope area is beautiful for walking around. When passing through NYC I'd stop and visit Washington Square park in The Village. Then I would head up to the Mystic Seaport on my way to Cape Cod.
