Has anyone heard anything about either of these places. What can be done with them?

We loved River Country it was so unique and would just like to go and visit it. Is this possible?

Part of the old River Country is now Mickey's Backyard BBQ. It still has the same bathrooms and old hair dryers. Made me really miss RC! Discovery Island is now a bird sanctuary and no one is allowed on it. In fact, there is one nearly extinct species of bird that lives on that island and nowhere else in the world. Pretty cool if you think about it.

That is neat. Do you know what kind of bird?

Well.... that shoots the Tortuga Bar all to heck!!!

The Dusky Seaside Sparrow, if I'm not mistaken.

Wickipedia is saying that this sparrow is now extinct.

quote:
"Five were captured and brought to the Walt Disney World Resort, to live out their days in a protected habitat on the Discovery Island nature reserve. By March 31, 1986, only one (named "Orange Band"), remained.

Despite being blind in one eye, Orange Band reached extreme old age for a sparrow, living at least eight years, and possibly as many as thirteen, before dying on June 17, 1987."

Really? I thought one bird was still there! That is so sad. I guess I should double check my facts before I post them. I'm sorry. I'll do some more research myself, too. Wikopedia is usually right, though. Man, I loved looking at that island thinking about that bird :guilty:

I read somewhere that they were going to stuff another DVC based resort in the area between WL and FW, but I can't provide a link or more info other than rumor.

Please don't apologize! You brought it to my attention. Now I know something I didn't know before, about a subject I am passionate about - birds!

I was not trying to correct you, just share the information I found.:)

Aren't those vultures that hang around there protected? After a few Kungaloosh at the Tortuga bar, they would look like a Dusky Seaside Sparrow.

Those are vultures???? I thought those were homeless, rundown peacocks!

I started to worry last October when they were circling over my campsite.
