One of Miami's (and Florida's) real civil rights heroes has passed away at the ripe old age of 95.
She was Carrie Meek, one of Florida's first Black Members of Congress and a lifelong local legend. Congresswoman Meek was always one of those few politicians who was focused on real results, rather than posturing.
I knew her son Kendrick when he was a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, and met him again years later when he was running unsuccessfully for the US Senate. Condolences to Kendrick and the rest of the family.
