This is a long story, bear with me. Yes, I know I'm sexy.

I work at a personal training studio. My coworker (we'll call her Jenny) made plans to buy a pound cake from one of her clients who bakes them for a living. Quite expensive, but worth the money. She purchased it for her dad's 50th birthday party.

The client came in and brought the cake. Jenny was going to pick it up later in the day. To keep anything from happening to it, the employees (we'll call them Carl and Liz) that were there put the cake in the fridge. Called Jenny to tell her the client had brought it and that it was in the kitchen. No problem.

Liz goes into the kitchen later and our boss is in there digging into the cake with a fork. Liz says, "Hey, that's Jenny's cake client X made for her. She's taking it to her Dad's birthday party!!!" Boss comes back with, "Oh well, there was no note or name on it."

So Jenny comes in that night to pick up the cake. Not only had our boss gotten into the cake, he didn't have the decency to cut a piece. He just kept getting bites of it with a fork. Jenny gets mad but realizes there was nothing she could do about it for the time being. She took the cake home and cut it into pieces so no one would ever see what happened.

Fast forward to the next day Jenny's at work (she only works part-time). She goes to our boss to find out what happened with the cake (Liz and Carl had told her). All she was wanting was, at the very least, a "sorry about that, my mistake." What does she get? CUSSED OUT!!! "What the h*** is wrong with you? You should put a d*** note on things like that. What the f- is that matter? You have no reason to be upset."

Needless to say, Jenny was livid. I am shocked she didn't just walk out right then and there.

My opinion: if you didn't bring it and it wasn't offered to you, it is not up for grabs.

My boss's opinion: there was no name on it, so it's fair game.

So all of you who share eating spaces with employees, what's your opinion? Jenny should have been honked, Jenny didn't have a name on it so it's for everyone? What do you think?

ETA: Hee hee, a related story. The day AFTER I heard this story, I brought in some goodies for Jenny and Carl as a thank-you. Jenny had trained my husband the week before when he was off, just to be nice, and Carl had done me a big favor. So I was sitting in the office talking to the two of them and in walks our boss. He looks at the goodies I brought said, "Ooooh muffins. Yummy!" He grabs 2 and leaves the office. The three of us looked and eat other, rolled our eyes and busted out laughing.

He is an inconsiderate jerk...and a pig on top of it all (hacking into somoenes whole cake with a fork, gawd!)

I would be really pissed off.

I forgot to add that our boss is admittedly an unmedicated bipolar.

Any place that I have worked and there is a shared fridge there was an unwritten rule. If you did not bring it in yourself, you did not eat it.

Honestly, your boss sounds like a pig (sorry, original word was blocked).

Not only that but this is a personal training business and the guy is chowing down on pound cake and muffins?? He sounds crass at the least. I think Jenny should've told him he'd just bought the damn cake and owed her $50 or whatever the cost.

Also, my office has 70+ employees and I don't recall hearing anyone complain that something was eaten w/o permission.

:furious: He's a moron and a jerk and Jenny should make him pay for the cake. I would have taken a piece out of his butt for it. People like that make me furious.

I can't believe anyone would dig into a cake like that! That is beyond rude! How was Jenny supposed to put a sign on the cake when she wasn't even the one there when it arrived! I'd have to start getting very passive-aggressive at work and put a tag on anything and everything that went into the fridge (and put everyone's name but the boss' on it!)!!!!

Exactly.

I agree. It seems to be common sense to me that when you share a work refrigerator, the items in it belong to those who put them there.

He is the boss, never mind he is a loser, and his opinion counts the most.

So, the moral of this lesson: Jenny needs to mark her stuff or her jerky boss will eat it.

I'm in a building with over 60 plus people and people bring their lunches all the time and put it in the fridge/freezer. IF I got hungry, at no time would I just go in there and look to see what I feel like having for lunch and nuke someone else's lunch. I would be so angry about that.

At work everyone writes their number on their food. If there's no number it's usually fair game since they have items donated all the time or buy some items (like coffee and bread) with the slush fund. There is a note on the fridge warning people not to eat any items with a number on them.

How rude! I work with 10 other people. Unless the food is left out, in one area, its not up for grabs. If it is on this one counter, we know its fair game. Today there were donuts on said counter. :teeth: And even if it was there to be shared, why the hell would you just eat it with a fork- wouldnt most normal people cut it and just take a peice?

I swear I would make some fudge with ex-lax and teach that asswipe a lesson. :furious:

The guy is a jerk, and it is pretty gross that he just took bites of the cake with his fork. He was also rude to yell at your co-worker!

I like the ex lax fudge idea.... :thumbsup2

Your boss is an inconsiderate, pig-jerk.

My college roommates and I baked chocolate Ex-Lax brownies for my husband (then boyfriend) and his roommates in college to teach them a lesson. Trust me, it worked, maybe too well. ;)

I worked for Walgreens corporate for many years, and I NEVER had anyone just dig into someone else's food without permission. There were many, many people in that office, and they all managed to keep their hands out of any food that wasn't their own. That is just reprehensible. (not often you get to use that word!) :rotfl2:
