Rides Your Young Daughter Didn't Like/Was Afraid Of?

Tink I too have only rode the Matterhorn 1 time when I was 12 (omg that was 25 years ago I just realized). I'm not a fan of most roller coasters.

I rode snow white last nite and did not find it jerky at all. And as for space mountain you saw everything there is to see with your eyes closed. It's very dark anyway so it looks almost the same eyes open or closed.

It really depends on what kind of fear your child has. My kids had two diffferent types. There's the fear of dark and scary places (Haunted Mansion, Snow White, etc.) and the fear of roller coasters (drops in particular). I had one kid afraid of the coasters and one afraid of the dark and scary. So while one would ride Thunder Mountain, she'd never go into the Haunted Mansion and the other was the opposite. If your child is afraid of everything, then your list is a good one and I'd add Indiana Jones.

Just a thought - every time we'd go, we'd all wait together in the lines and give the kids the opportunity to back out once we got to the front. Hubby and I took turns leaving with the scared child if need be. There was never any judgement or rolling of the eyes. Just patience and support. They went on more rides than we thought they would. Of course it took more than one trip, but they began to want to push through their biggest fears. And when they learn to master fear, nothing can stop them! I'll never forget the first time our oldest summoned the courage to step onto Thunder Mountain. When she got off, she was glowing with accomplishment. We called all the grandparents right then and there. It was great.

Have a great time!

Oh wow! I would've had NO CLUE about It's Tough to be a Bug!!!

My dd is scared of villian type characters, but LOVES roller coasters, etc. So I think we will just be avoiding ones like Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Snow White, and most likely Tower of Terror.

My DD is scared of Nemo and Space Mountain. She is 6 now. Both are dark issues and Nemo is a cramped dark space that shows you all the predators from the movie out the windows. I would just give kids a heads up so they know what to expect.

She gets nervous going up the Matterhorn but I showed her a youtube of the yeti and I told her he was coming and we should wave hi to him. It made it seem less scary. Snow White isn't a problem for her.

She did just do Tough to be a Bug with my DH. I would not have taken her as that movie scares me!!! She sat in his lap though, so she didn't feel many of the effects.

I have to echo this sentiment. We have 4 kids, aged 6 to 18, and have always made sure they knew all through the lines that they were welcome to back out at any time, and that it was no big deal if they did. DH and I don't mind stepping out of line with anyone who is scared. It's supposed to be fun, so the rule in our family is, "nobody has to go on anything they don't want to go on".

To our surprise, our kids have never asked to back out of a line. Throughout the years, in the lines of rides I think might frighten them, I'm sure to lean down and quietly say, "you know you don't have to ride this if you don't want to. It's totally okay to back out. I'll sit outside with you. We can walk out even if you change your mind at the very last second". It's almost like, knowing there is absolutely no pressure to ride, and no frustration on our part if they back out, leaves them feeling totally non-threatened. At least, that's been our experience.

On our last visit our youngest was almost six. She is the more timid of our girls. Our oldest at age eight rode everything and was only bothered by the entrance to TOT. The ride was fine.

DD5 however was not a fan of the Haunted Mansion and still is not keen to go on our next trip. She was nervous about Pirates however enjoyed once we rode.

She loved Jumpin Jellyfish and would ride with any willing adult. Mulholland Madness was a huge hit for the kids, not the adults and we would let them ride this on their own, there was no wait time and we could see them the whole time.

We did not pressure the kids the first few days and became more game as the week went on to the point where they were putting hands up in the air on Pirates.

DD was only scared of "It's tough to be a bug" we both really hate bugs.. so it creeped us both out :)

This is definitely going to depend upon the child. My 3.5 year old LOVES the Matterhorn, Snow White and Haunted Mansion. Every time we get off one of them, she says she wants to go again. She hated BTMR, Space Mountain and Splash Mountain. She was indifferent about Pirates, definitely not scared though.

The one that got my daughter was Alice in wonderland... Omg. That cats head started spinning at the end and she lost her mind!:scared1:

my daughter also HATES "It's Tough to be a Bug
Mine too!

She is 7, and loves Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain, Tower of Terror - even Rockin Aerosmith in DW - but she won't do California Screamin!

The Nemo Sub's get to me!! So, I asked to go to the Room for those that can't do the Sub's!! It is the same Movie without the cramped space, no car sickness and much more comfortable space to watch the show!! :wizard: :goodvibes Then I don't miss my Favorite movie/ride!!

I am claustrophobic so have never been able to do that ride. I honestly didn't know there was a room for those who couldn't do the ride!

yeah... I was able to go do the ride because I'm not claustrophobic, but I think they made the room mainly for wheelchair accessibility, but also if your child (or you) is scared of small tight cramped spaces, then you can ask to be taken to the handicap accessible room (I'm not sure what exactly DL calls that room, but I'm sure they'll know what you mean if you say you're claustrophobic and would like to go to the wheelchair/handicap accessible room). :goodvibes

That's funny, because last time we were there, I was talking to the cm at the line entrance about how I couldn't go on the ride because of that, and she didn't mention that option to me at all. :(

When we took my 4 y/o daughter she rode:

Pirates of the Carribean
Thunder mountain
Space Mountain
Haunted mansion

and loved all those:thumbsup2

She also went on Tower of Terrow, but didn't like that at all!:scared1:

She refused to go on Matterhorn, Snow White and Splash Mountain.

So it really really depends on the child. I was astonished that she got on Space Mountain but didn't want to have anything to do with snow white.

Oh well maybe next time ;)

started riding all these @ 3.5 yrs and been 4 times since

Matterhorn Bobsleds (hates the yeti wont ride it rode it once)
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (loves it her favorite)
Haunted Mansion (likes it a lot)
Pirates of the Carribean (loves pirates)
Snow White Scary Adventures (hates the trees in it)
Space Mountain ( loves it)
Jumpin Jellyfish ( likes it)
Mulholland Madness (really likes it)

soarin loves it
tower of terror been on a few times doesnt care for it
splash likes it

Snow White may be spooky to some. I rode it alone (17 yrs old at the time and I was in an odd numbered group) and I found the trees and the alligator to be a little scary.

When I was 5, I rode HM in my own car, and took the ride so seriously. At the end of the ride when the narrator tells you that "the ghosts are going to follow you WHEREVER YOU GO!" - paraphrasing there - I freaked out and came off the ride crying.

It really depends on your child, and no one knows your child better than you. Maybe try watching Youtube videos of the rides with them before you go to see how they might handle it (it doesn't completely ruin the surprises of the ride for them!)? It definitely could help if they are prepared for what they're about to see.

Not sure how helpful I'll be since I don't have any kiddos of my own, but I can tell you this. When I was younger I was terrified of Splash Mountain (still am actually, lol). Love(d) Space. And for some reason was a bit iffy of the Gadget's Go Coaster, but ended up liking it.

Hope that helped. :)

We just got back from Disneyland last week. My DS is 5.5 and we took him on every ride he was tall enough to go on. Now, he didn't cry but we knew which ones he wouldn't go back on again. He almost didn't get on Tower of Terror because we waited so long he really psyched himself out about it but he went on it. He didn't like Prirates the first time but when we went on it again I talked him through it and he asked to go on it again. He went on Big thunder railroad twice but not because he asked. Actually what he was most scare of was the speed. He would always ask us when we went to get in line for a ride "is it fast?" Oh by the way, Mulholland Madness isn't open. It is being converted to Goofy's flying School.
