Chapter 17 - Kona Café Breakfast

It was our last full day at Disney and the original plans were to head into the Magic Kingdom for rope drop, do some quick rides and collect a FP or two, and then hop the resort monorail to the Polynesian in time for our 10:45 breakfast ADR at

2180.jpg

Unfortunately, this late in our trip the well thought out plans from weeks/months before had long gone by the wayside. Everyone was running a little behind schedule, so we bypassed rope drop at MK and opted to get there after we finished our breakfast. We caught a bus from OKW to the MK, then walked over to the resort monorail and were off to the Poly.

We were a little early for our ADR and had only a short wait after check-in to be seated. Either we picked a good morning to try the Kona breakfast for the first time, or most people had already eaten and headed off to the parks since it didn't seem like the restaurant was very busy.

We had eaten breakfast at O'Hana a few times before, and one of the things everybody loved we were happy to also get at Kona, and that was

2166.jpg

That juice is so good, and I always drink more than my share!!! Of course Matthew probably enjoyed that juice as much as anyone, so it reminded me once again that this was our first trip without him along............... :sad1:

I had read many times on the DIS about Tonga Toast, and this would be my day to eventually try it, even though there are actually three items on the breakfast menu here that would certainly tempt me. Jonathan ordered one of the other items, which luckily also contains the third item, so at least I would get to see what the others looked like (if not sneak a taste where appropriate). While we were waiting for our breakfast to arrive, our server brought this out for me........to build anticipation??? (as if that was needed) :woohoo:

2167.jpg

I also got the chance to take a couple of pictures of the artwork on the wall near our table.

2168.jpg

Hmmm, a slotted wooden spoon maybe??? Just in case, I couldn't pass up THAT picture..........
2169.jpg

Soon our order arrived.........and being the good DISer I had to make everyone wait until I could get a picture. Everyone must not have been too upset having to wait, as they all joined in with the "thumbs up" shout out to our Canadian friend Jen (jenbear) who was now gone, but obviously not forgotten.

Jonathan ordered the Big Kahuna, which comes with the Macadamia Pineapple pancakes that I was very tempted to order.
2170.jpg

I tried to get Andrew to order the Macadamia Pineapple pancakes, but he stuck with the plain, simple pancakes with bacon. Guess he was afraid to be too adventurous..........or he just wanted to make sure ole Dad wouldn't ask him to share. :rolleyes1
2171.jpg

Alison got the Two Eggs Your Way platter with bacon
2172.jpg

And finally a picture of my Tonga Toast, with the link sausage that I always love at O'Hana because it tastes exactly like the country sausage I am used to from growing up in the South. I know it is probably the same sausage served at the other Disney restaurants, but for some reason I always thought it was just a little better when we ate at O'Hana!
2173.jpg

So what did everyone think of their breakfast? Well, everyone was very happy with their choice except.............ME!!!

I know this may be sacrilege to many here on the DIS, but even though I thought the Tonga Toast was okay, with the strawberry compote on top it was just way too much sweet combined together for me. And that is saying a lot because I am not normally one for shying away from sweets! (It WAS a little better when I used some of the regular syrup Andrew had left over where I hadn't already poured the strawberry compote)

Of course, the link sausage may have also added to my overall opinion of the breakfast. For some reason I guess Disney wasn't making enough money off of their restaurants. In the time since we had been there at New Year's somebody came up with the bright idea to replace the delicious country sausage links with one that tasted like it is packed with fillers! All I can say about that is a big YUK :crazy2: and after I got home from this trip, I had the opportunity to fill out a survey and I made very sure to mention that fact!!! I guess sometime in the future I will get to find out if it did any good, otherwise I will be sticking with the bacon.

I did get to taste a bite of the Macadamia Pineapple pancakes on Jonathan's Big Kahuna, and I think that will be what I order next time I book a Kona breakfast ADR.

Breakfast done and the requisite settlement of the bill, I took an opportunity to get some resort pictures before we hopped the monorail back to the MK. I always enjoy the tropical feel I get at the Poly when I am watching the waterfalls in the center of the lobby. :cloud9:

2177.jpg

And the themeing is some of the best at Disney I think; but then I love the tropical setting of the Poly over some of the other themed resorts.
2178.jpg

Apparently they teach a hula dancing class for the kids??? :confused3

After getting my quick pictures it was time to head to the monorail platform and finally make it over to.............................

Coming up Chapter 18 - Magic Kingdom/Tutto Italia Dinner

Marv, sorry you didn't enjoy your Tonga Toast. I've never had it (I don't like bananas and it looks way too sweet to me and you have now confirmed that). Mark had the Big Kahuna last year in September I believe...he enjoyed it but was not crazy about the macademia pancakes.

Funny....Disney's bacon seems to be getting better and now the sausage is getting worse. :confused3

Beautiful pictures of the Poly; someday I will stay there again.

Great Update even if LONG overdue !!!:rotfl2:I see I didn't mess up the top of the page this time !!Note to self Use the Crystal Ball to mess up the top of the page !!!!:rotfl2: I think I would have the same reaction to Tonga Toast !!I do want to try the Big Kahuana . but will ask for the sauce on the side !! Heck I put salt on pancakes :rotfl2::rotfl2: The Theming at Poly is a favorite of mine too !!I just love going there to just see it !!!

great photos of the Poly! sorry you didn't like your breakfast! would be way to sweet for my taste...not a sausage lover, would get the bacon!

Megan and I were going through restaurants we want to try in Nov and Kona Cafe has made the list...I just really want the juice and pressed pot!

happy to hear Drew is feeling better! and we finally get to see your Oct 2011 photos :thumbsup2

Chapter 17 - Kona Café Breakfast

Mmmmm...Kona Cafe...

We were a little early for our ADR and had only a short wait after check-in to be seated. Either we picked a good morning to try the Kona breakfast for the first time, or most people had already eaten and headed off to the parks since it didn't seem like the restaurant was very busy.

At 10:45? I imagine they were getting ready to serve lunch at that point!

I tried to get Andrew to order the Macadamia Pineapple pancakes, but he stuck with the plain, simple pancakes with bacon. Guess he was afraid to be too adventurous..........or he just wanted to make sure ole Dad wouldn't ask him to share. :rolleyes1

I think we all know the answer there!

I know this may be sacrilege to many here on the DIS, but even though I thought the Tonga Toast was okay, with the strawberry compote on top it was just way too much sweet combined together for me. And that is saying a lot because I am not normally one for shying away from sweets!

I'm not a fan of bananas added to my food, so I don't think I'd care for it either.

I guess sometime in the future I will get to find out if it did any good, otherwise I will be sticking with the bacon.

Well, bacon does make everything better. Nobody says that about sausage. ;)

And the themeing is some of the best at Disney I think; but then I love the tropical setting of the Poly over some of the other themed resorts.

I like it a lot, too. Parts of it seem a little dated, but how can they not? It's my favorite theme of the monorail resorts.

Be still my heart...the Polynesian will always be my home resort even if it's now way out of the budget. Thanks so much for the photos - next best thing to being there. :goodvibes Lots of wonderful memories of stays there with my kids. :cloud9:

Not much of a fan of Kona - don't really get why it is so popular. We've tried a few times but never had a good luck - we found it expensive and food so-so at best. We tried Tonga Toast back in 1982 and that was the last time. Not a fan of bananas in French toast and it is Sooo darn sweet!

Andrew's breakfast looks yummy! ::yes:: That's a shame about the sausage. :sad2: Oh my gosh, the OJ is soooo yummy!!!

Have you tried Ohana's breakfast? Never expected to enjoy it as I am so NOT a fan of Stitch, but it was one of my all time favorite breakfasts - even as a character breakfast. Rosie and I might have to enjoy Kona and Ohana's before the cruise.:thumbsup2

Very nice birthday update for Rosie!! ;) :cool1:

They just miss you! You know, the more your teased, the more your LOVED!!!! :grouphug: Or that is what they keep telling me!

SO THANKFUL Drew is back to 100 percent! Tell him to BE CAREFUL, it's a jungle out there! :scared:
Thanks Judy! I know that is at least the philosophy to believe in when I'm picking on somebody here on the DIS! :)

To paraphrase the old saying "Bad publicity is better than no publicity at all!"............ Getting picked on is better than people not caring enough to even comment!!! (and around here, how much you are picked on is normally a sign of how much that is!) :goodvibes

I know Kathy and Rosie love me...........well, I think they do.............well maybe.............uh :confused3

Am I one of the ones in trouble??? :scared1: Remember I was NICE to you!
That's funny that you would think you are in trouble........but of course not my friend! The only part of those replies that applied to you are the ones right under your comment I quoted!!!

Of course, now that you mentioned it, I do have a few pictures of you working the table at the HoB concert I might could post.................. ;)

And another one........

you keep telling us we are old....we just want to be "around" to see it finished.
You know.......that IS an excellent point!!! And so pertinent coming from you..............

But to have quality, you NEED to work on it!
Another excellent point..........just not quite as excellent as the first one! :thumbsup2 I'll try to get right on that though......

Hey, there I am trying very hard to get on your good side and then you start threatening me????? :sad2:
Not threatening you my dear friend! I was pointing out that you appeared to be sucking up in such an obvious way, that you must have realized you would soon be one of the stars of this TR........ :scratchin

But then I guess you aren't talking about me since I know I am so photogenic that there can't possibly exist any not so flattering pictures!! :lmao:
This is so true. Besides, if there did exist any such pictures, say from a lunch at 50s PT that you didn't want to use in your own TR, there is no way I would post them on my TR and spoil that image of perfection and photogenicity that everyone has of you..........

Really I wouldn't ............... :rolleyes1

I love bananas, and often have them cut up on cereal for breakfast. The first two or three bites were pretty good, but when you start to get the bananas plus the sugar sprinkled on the outside plus the sweetness of the strawberry compote.........it gets overwhelming quickly! If I did try the Tonga Toast again, I think I would just keep the compote on the side and just dip a little at a time, or maybe even do some of the bites with none at all.

Funny....Disney's bacon seems to be getting better and now the sausage is getting worse. :confused3

Beautiful pictures of the Poly; someday I will stay there again.
Maybe you will hit the lottery and you can stay there and invite me down to stay with you so we can have a DISmeet! The Poly would be a great place for that, although knowing us we would probably have our first DISmeet at one of the parks, like DHS (ToT anyone?) or more likely somewhere in Epcot since you love stopping for those adult beverages. :goodvibes

Heck I put salt on pancakes :rotfl2: The Theming at Poly is a favorite of mine too !!I just love going there to just see it !!!
If you look at Kathy's post right after, you will see how I originally reserved that spot quickly before you could get there............

I have visited the Poly many times also. Maybe one day a stay will be on the agenda. One place I could say it is a great place to visit, and I WOULD want to stay there!!! :thumbsup2

great photos of the Poly! sorry you didn't like your breakfast! would be way to sweet for my taste...not a sausage lover, would get the bacon!

Megan and I were going through restaurants we want to try in Nov and Kona Cafe has made the list...I just really want the juice and pressed pot!

happy to hear Drew is feeling better! and we finally get to see your Oct 2011 photos :thumbsup2
We had eaten at Kona for dinner before, and it was a great meal so I was excited about doing the breakfast there. Everyone else really enjoyed their meal, and the big thing for me is that the Tonga Toast is really a lot of food, and just seemed to get sweeter and sweeter. But there was nothing wrong with the quality and I would definitely go back, so I know you and Megan will really enjoy it! :yay:

And yes, I guess you will soon be making an appearance in this TR also............. ;)

Mmmmm...Kona Cafe...

At 10:45? I imagine they were getting ready to serve lunch at that point!

When I originally made the ADR I was thinking 9:00 rope drop, hit a couple of rides and grab a couple of FPs before they moved out too far into the day, and then head out to eat, so yes I was looking for that latest breakfast time slot before it moved over to a lunch menu.

Hey, it sounded good in theory.............

I think we all know the answer there!

You're probably right.............you know me well. Are we really that much alike??? :rotfl:

I'm not a fan of bananas added to my food, so I don't think I'd care for it either.

It wasn't the bananas because I really like those, but it just got sweeter with each bite......and that sucker ain't tiny.............

Well, bacon does make everything better. Nobody says that about sausage. ;)

You need to eat the real sausage you find in the south, where people slaughter their own hogs and grind their own............fresh and not filled with all the preservatives and additives. You wouldn't be the first from up north who changed their minds............ :)

I like it a lot, too. Parts of it seem a little dated, but how can they not? It's my favorite theme of the monorail resorts.
By far it blows away the other monorail resorts! The Poly and Wilderness Lodge are the two I haven't stayed at that are high on my bucket list!

Be still my heart...the Polynesian will always be my home resort even if it's now way out of the budget. Thanks so much for the photos - next best thing to being there. :goodvibes Lots of wonderful memories of stays there with my kids. :cloud9:

Very nice birthday update for Rosie!! :cool1:
Glad you enjoyed the update Christine! The Poly is a wonderful place! We had dinner at Kona once before, and it was wonderful! :cloud9: There was nothing wrong with the food that morning (well, except the sausage). I guess I was so looking forward to trying the Tonga Toast from reading so many reports about it, and then it just got too sweet to finish.

We have actually eaten at O'Hana's a couple of times before......always for breakfast! As a matter of fact, hang on because the next morning O'Hana was our breakfast before we headed home. :coffee:

(And yes I hear that O'Hana is also wonderful for dinner, so I have to look into getting that one booked when I make it back sometime.)
