We are going to WDW in October with my boys who are 4 and 6. In your opinion what rides are too extreme for them? What about Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, The Haunted Mansion, SOARIN', and Test Track?

DS5 has been on all of these and Space Mountain. He loved them all!!! Take them on all unless they ask to stay behind. We presented each ride to DS and if he was scared we didn't force him to get on. Once on, he really enjoyed them.

Out of your list, DS (age 5 and 42" at the time) went on Big Thunder, Splash, and Soarin'.

He did fine on the coasters and reeeeeally loved Soarin'.

He wasn't interested in Pirates or Haunted Mansion (because he just doesn't like ghost-type scary stuff) but as the other poster said, I would let a kid who wanted to go.

I think Test Track was closed when we were there, so can't comment on that one.

I was also told by someone else that Dinosaur at Ak can be too intense visually even fif the kids are tall enough.

There is a "By Kids, For Kids" book, in which you can read kids' reviews of the rides, as well.

Have a great trip!

Depends on the kid. Some are fearless and do everything they are tall enough for. Some are scared of almost everything. If they are scared of the dark just be aware that even the kiddie rides are often very dark. My kids are brave, but we are not thrill junkies. In other words, Dinosaur is a YES but TOT is a NO. Oldest dd does all of the coasters alone. HM is a favorite for all of us!! You are just gonna have to play it by ear, but I would never force a kid either. Soarin' is a beautiful, gentle ride. Test Track is dd9's favorite!!!

All of these sound okay. My DS's 4 and 7 went on them and they were their favorite rides. The only ones that DS 4 didn't want to go on were Splash Mnt., ToT, Rockin' Rollercoaster.

They both even went on Mission Space ( the slower version ) and they both loved that one too.

My DD's favorite ride since she was 4 is ToT, she rides everything except MS b/c I can't go and RnR she is not tall enough maybe next trip and primeval whirl-this ride is abusive to adults I am surprised its still around.

It really does depend on your child. My DS at just turned 4 loves Soarin' and Test Track but no way on earth would I have gotten him on those other rides. Test Track I actually tricked him onto by calling it the "car ride" and he did love it once he got on it, but I couldn't get him near alot of the other rides.

It depends on the kid. I have a very tall kid and by 4.5 or 5 he could, and did, ride everything. He loves the thrill rides and the dark stuff.

However...my big bad son was petrified of It's Tough to be a Bug at AK. We did it once when he was 4 and he refused to go on it again until he was about 10. He wasn't real thrilled about Honey I Shrunk the Audience either.

this approach might not be for everyone, but it worked for us. Our kids 6 and 9 are VERY adventerous but if we told them about something ahead of time they would chicken out. So we made a rule, if you are tall enough you have to ride it at least once. If you dont like it, you dont have to do it again. so far there hasn't been a single ride that they havent liked. and I think they have ridden just about everything as they have gotten taller over the past 3 years.

It depends on the kid, I've seen kids who couldn't be older than 4 on Splash Mountain and everything, but I've also seen 12 year olds begging their parents to let them stay off the ride.

My son was almost 4 yrs. old on our last trip and tends to be intimidated by loud sounds. He is also very aware of what others are saying around him. therefore, while waiting to board a ride if he heard others mention that the particular ride (or any other) MIGHT be scary than it was a "no go". We stuck with the "kiddie" rides for him although he did ride pirates but wasn't crazy about it. I think he could have handled some of the other attractions but I didn't want to push the issue because I wanted his experience to be fun.

I think once your in the situation you will have a better idea of your children's needs. Have a great trip.
