Ride roughness?

Planning our semi-first trip to UO/IOA and I've got a couple of questions.

I've been before, but it was almost 15 years ago. Mom has been to UO, but that was in the pre-MIB days. My best friend is joining us for one day, and though she lives in Orlando, she hasn't gotten to do Harry Potter.

I know what I can ride. But they don't.

Mom won't do coasters, so that's easy. She also doesn't want to get wet. As I recall, if you wear a poncho and sit near the middle, Jurassic Park doesn't get you too wet. Do I remember right? She also needs to limit the jerky rides. She can handle Dinosaur at WDW, but not Space Mountain, for example. They're different types of rough. Should she be ok on the Forbidden Journey and Gringots?

And for my best friend... she gets very sick on Spider-Man and Transformers, but does fine on Mummy. From what I see of videos, I'm afraid she'd have a problem with both FJ and Gringots, am I right?

Thanks, y'all!

If it's just a matter of roughness and not motion sickness your mom should be fine on the HP attractions.
Your friend that gets sick on Transformers and Spider-Man should avoid Forbidden Journey. It is probably their most nauseating ride. If it's more an issue of the screens 3D though she might be ok if she just closes her eyes during the video portions. She should probably be alright on Gringotts, it is vey similar to Mummy. Less intense though and doesn't spin much, but does have a lot of 3D video screens.
Jurassic Park isn't too bed wetness wise. Rode it last month when I went and without a poncho we hardly got wet at all. I would avoid Popeye and Dudley's if wanting to stay dry though.

Jurassic park ride varies every ride..........

We did it 8 times in a row last week and probably rode it around 50 times over our trip just gone, and it varied from coming off dry, slightly sprinkled, wet.......and drenched.......

Every day we rode it it was different depending on how the boat was loaded........don't depend on being dry.

I was far right on the front row on jurassic park last week and got soaked!! It was that dinosaur that knocks you off course!! I don't normally get motion sickness but the forbidden journey makes me feel sick, I ended up having to shut my eyes on the parts with the screens.
If you are going with someone who doesn't get on with rough rides, avoid the mummy!! I love that ride but there are a few very sudden stops. I love that ride so I've learned where they are so I brace myself for impact!! Agree that Gringotts ride is fine, the coaster parts are really smooth and it's great fun!

Awesome, thanks for the feedback, y'all!

We're definitely keepibg Dudley and Popeye off the table. And thanks for the warning on Mummy

In the cases where you can you might want to try the single rider line yourself and then report back to them - we can only guess at what they can handle.
Both Gringotts and forbidden journey have single ride as I recall.

For me,Gringotts was great. Forbidden journey was way too rough, the jerky movement combined with the visuals had me feeling disoriented and queazy.

Transformers bounces you around a lot, it was very rough on my back and neck.

I love coasters... I say that just to be sure you know where I'm coming from (so, for example Rock'n'Roller coaster at DHS)... and Forbidden Journey made me sicker than a dog, and I feel it is one of the roughest rides I've ever been on (extremely jerky). Gringotts didn't bother me at all, but I could see where it would bother someone with motion sickness. So... it's a tough call on that one.

For whatever reason, I've had quite different experiences than some of the PPs. Spiderman - had to close my eyes, especially the part plunging down between the sky scrapers. DGS wanted to ride again, so I went with him but kept my eyes closed the entire time. Similar with the Simpson's - had to close my eyes multiple times, and missed the entire end of the ride from a visual perspective. But I didn't really have any problems with Forbidden Journey. Generally, with sim rides, if I start to feel queasy, simply closing my eyes will get me through the rest of the ride and without aftereffects. Wish I could say the same for coasters. . .

That's the thing, we all react so differently to how rides affect us.

I get worse if I close my eyes, I need to focus on something if I start to feel ill. Will never go on the Simpsons again though, nothing works on that for me.........fine on other rides and coasters though.......:D

But, really it's why we always tell folks to try and see how they are on different rides, they might be fine.

Exactly why I decided to post my experiences! I would have hated to have missed FJ because I thought it would "for sure" make me ill. There are no "for sure's" until you try it for yourself!

Jurassic Park is one of my favorite rides but it is so unpredictable. We went on it once and barely got a sprinkle. The next time we got absolutely soaked. Me and my daughter looked at each other and cracked up. We couldn't believe it. (We were sitting in pretty much the same row both times. second to the last row)

That Popeye ride was insane. Me and my sister got the full brunt of it the entire ride. There was not a part of us that was not soaked. Ugh!

As far as motion sickness - I take Meclizine the night before we do any parks and then again the morning of our park day. I don't have any issues with any rides except maybe something that spins. I avoid those type of rides at all costs! (Though The Simpson ride from the back seat was not very good for me)

Just bumping this thread as I found it useful. I've been meaning to ask about Meclizine and whether it would help.

The last time I was in IoA, it was during the early Spider-Man years (literally 1999) and I don't remember having a problem there. But in the intervening years I've become a person with positional vertigo (meaning the inner ear stuff that can sometimes be fixed by repositioning maneuvers. Most of the time it's not a problem). But I'll be WORRIED about the vertigo now, whereas when I was younger all I cared about was heights (so no Hulk).

Last year I did Space Mountain for the first time in a decade (it's now MUCH darker than it was when I was going a lot in the 90s) and while I didn't get motion sick per se, I got a neck ache because I couldn't see the curves coming. I was fine on Thunder Mountain because I could see where we were going.

I occasionally get seasick on rough cruises. Meclizine helps a bit. I get carsick if I'm not looking ahead during a sudden maneuver. I don't get airsickness at all (just sweaty palms).

The thread contains a lot of conflicting info (I know everyone is different), but I'm pretty sure I'm not doing Forbidden Journey (although the way the ride is built looks fascinating). I'm having a harder time figuring out these other newer "3D indoor roller coaster simulator" rides though. I guess Gringott's should be fine. Simpson's sounds like a no-go. Unsure of Dispicable Me and Mummy.

Sudden drops shouldn't get me, nor sudden acceleration or curves. I think the main thing I'm worried about is unexpected rough lateral movement, or something that tilts me (and my head) backwards far enough that my inner ear problem gets tweaked.

I know I'm rambling a bit, but would be interested in feedback. If the problems most people are talking about are due to 3D stuff, I can close my eyes.

I take Bonine, which I will start this Friday before we leave on Sunday...our first park day will be Monday. I also bought this herbal patch to wear on Amazon that got high reviews. My doctor prescribed the patch but it was $50 for 5 :sad2::sad2::sad2::sad2: Which I am just not willing to pay.

That being said, the HP Journey ride still made me nauseous. I have an issue with screens so I know I won't be able to do Simpsons. But I might just close my eyes if my kids want to do it. I haven't tried Minions, Spiderman, or Transformers but plan on trying and closing eyes if need be. I also get Ginger Ale, which helps a lot. As for jerky, the Mummy is really jerky and is a roller coaster type of ride as is Gringotts but it isn't as jerky.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! Would be curious to hear how it goes for you.
