Ride chicken needs input: Big Thunder or Star Tours?

I try to do one "thrill ride" each trip. I love rides like Soarin', POC, Kali, Dinosaur; but could never do Splash or ToT. I hated Test Track. Taking that into consideration, do you think I could handle Big Thunder or Star Tours. DS wants me to do Star Tours and DH says Big Thunder is more spiral than drops.

I don't believe either of them . . . You folks I believe!

Which should I try? (I'm already ringing my hands . . .)

They are very two different rides.

If you didn't like Test Track, I really don't think you will like Big Thunder Mountain. It doesn't really drop but does move quickly.

My DH loves everything, but he CAN NOT do Star Tours. It makes him very sick. Star Tours is a motion simulator. You sit in a row of chairs and they move around in front of a big screen showing things from Star Wars.

Good luck on your decision!!

I get motion sickness on some rides and Star Tours was one of them. But being that you did soarin then you shouldnt have a problem with that. Thunder mountain doesnt have any big drops, its just a fast moving coaster.

Star Tours gives me motion sickness, so I won't do that.

I am going to try the 'new' milder version of Mission Space this time, maybe you could give that one a try.

There is also the new Expedition Everest to try.

Of the two you listed, I would go with the thunder mountain. Even DH won't ride Star Tours any more because he felt motion sickness after the last time.

I am a ride chicken as well, and I can handle BTM, but Star Tours makes me nauseous as most of the simulator type rides do (even Soarin at one point). I would take BTM over Dinosaur which I just found far to jerky for me!

I'm not crazy about Test Track, but more for the fact that with only a party of two we are always riding with someone else, and it's a tight squeeze with my big tush!- so that makes me anxious! If like other rides they just kept family members together I would be fine, but they stick the single riders in to fill up the car!

I am generally okay if I am not going upside or major large drops!

I am a huge roller coaster chicken - hate heights and drops. BTMRR is my absolute favorite ride in all of WDW and possibly the outside world as well. It has three lift hills, but instead of dropping straight down you move very quickly through some turns as you spiral down the mountain. There are some smaller dips similar to POC or Maelstrom but nothing approaching Splash Mountain and you never go upside down. Try sitting in the first car if you are nervous as you go a bit slower coming out of the lift hills. If you want details on the ride, feel free to PM me. I am sure there are lots of videos out there as well.
As for Star Tours, it is not scary per se, just jerky. It may be a good choice if you don't suffer from motion sickness.
ETA: I just re-read your post and saw that you didn't like Test Track. The movement in BTM is very similar just not as fast. So imagine the quick sharp turn multiplied at slightly lesser speeds in a train style car and you have BTM.

I like Star Tours. I get motion sick very easily, but I don't really have a problem on Star Tours.

I am a huge ride chicken. I love all the rides you love - and can not do the ones you mentioned you won't. I tried Test Track - but found the first part boring and did not care for the fast part around the track. I love the motion simulator rides - so I would vote for Star Tours. If you do not think you will get motion sickness and want to try it - try starting out in the "middle" ( I have always heard this is where the motion is less "intense") - if that works, then next time, try for the top outside corner seats - (this is where the motion is a little more "intense"). Have fun!!!! :wizard:

From another Ride Chicken, I can tell you I am FINE doing Star Tours, but have yet to ride any of the Mountains, some day!!

Of the two, I would pick Big Thunder. Soarin' didn't bother me at all but Star Tours made me sick feeling for the rest of the day. I am also going to try the new Mission: Space. I am really nervous though!!

I'm a chicken too and I love Big Thunder. Will never step foot on Tower of Terror, Splash Mountain, etc.

Star Tours is not a thrill ride really. It's a motion simulator, that's all, completely stationary save a few left and right tilts.

My dad hates rides too, but he went on BTMRR and thought it was worse than SM.

I would consider BTM a sort of roller coaster primer. As far as coaters go, it's pretty wimpy. Give it a shot.

ST is less a thrill ride than Dinosaur.

I guess what I am saying is, YES, do them both! :cool1:

Depending on whether you have motion sickness issues would decide this one for me.

Personally if you do not like Test Track - you will NOT like BTMR. This ride is much more intense than TT. I am a major ride chicken but I love TT and BTMR was just barely doable for me. I know the wanting to do the rides - I even got on EE our last trip which was a major deal for me.

As for Star Tours - I am very sensitive to motion sickness issues and felt horrible after this ride. It however doesn't really do anything other than rumble around so there is no "scary" aspect to it.

Good luck on your decision.

OP--What is it about Test Track that you hate? If it's the herky-jerky sudden stops/turns, then I cannot recommend either Star Tours or Big Thunder Mountain for you. (However, you do need to go to Disneyland and ride their Space Mountain--very smooth!) Have you considered Expedition Everest? I hear it's very smooth and a blast!
I have been a ride chicken for most of my adult life until just recently. What changed? Well, my DS8 and I agreed for last year's trip to WDW that each would try at least once whatever the other one wanted to try. So he got me to go on Tower of Terror (I hated the drops!) and I got him to try Dinosaur (he kept his eyes closed the whole time.) We both did Space Mountain--and though I much prefer DL's version, I wasn't bothered by SM too much--I think because I kept my eyes open.
I love BTMRR--but it's taken me a while!
Good luck! :sunny:

I personally am like you and I do not ride either ride. I have not been to disney in about two years, but I am going in october. Not sure which I will ride either.

If you like Soarin' I would think you'd like ST. I'm not much of a thrill seeker either but I though ST was very fun and easy to take. Much easier than Dinosaur! No hand wringing necessary. : )

I am also a "roller coaster chicken" but for my DH I try to get a little more daring everytime. And I have tried both BTM and Star Tours. I don't think BTM is so bad....it's fast but not that bad. Star Tours does get me a little sick from the motion. Hope this helps, and good luck!!

If you do ride Star Tours and feel motion sickness during the ride- close your eyes. The actual motion of the ride is pretty tame and you will feel so much better. It's the movie/motion combo that makes people feel sick. Really, this ride isn't bad unless you've just eaten (or forgotten to take the Dramamine, in my case).

I am a big time ride chicken!!! I HATE rollercoasters. I am so bad that I tried Goofy's Barnstormer with my granddaughter and got sick. That being said, Splash Mountain is not so bad. It has a few small drops and that big one at the end but the theming is worth it. I just make sure I sit in the back, take a deep breathe and close my eyes at the top of the big drop. :goodvibes

I also do Star Tours. I love teacups and if you can do teacups then Star Tours isn't bad. If you start to feel bad just fix your eyes on a non moving object and keep them there. Then you don't become disoriented. Have fun!!
