we are rhubarb people up here in Maine....it grows like a big big weed...do not cut it when you are harvesting it.....pull it up and then cut it from the leaves and the growth at the bottom. This way the rhubarb will grow back faster....we had it last year up until october then we mowed it down. Our variety is called strawberry rhubarb. ALthough I hate it...makes my mouth drool thinking about it.....My husband and son love strawberry rhubarb pie....just finished one off.....I do have to add sugar to mine..cause the strawberrys were very tart and the green stuff was too....could not say the word again....hope you enjoy your rhubarb......yuck

You Mainers sure know your rhubarb. A friend of mine who's family had a huge farm in Maine told me this little secret many years ago. I use to cut it with a knife. She laughed at me. Just pull it. From that time on my rhubarb have been the healthiest plants. I have 2 circles at the far corner of the garden. If allowed to they would be 5-6 feet wide. I try to keep them picked, which isn't always easy.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie is also one of my favorites. I also drool, but I drool because I can't wait to have a piece of the pie with vanilla ice cream.

This root from the rhubarb plant is over 75 years old....we took it from my mother in laws home 15 years ago...and planted it....her root was from the original farm land ...I have given pieces of this plant every fall.....

That so neat that this plant has been in your family for so long. It's also very special that it's off-springs are shared with friends. I love plants that have been given to me by friends, they are always very dear to my heart.

Over 75 years old. Wow!! That's even older then Mamu now thats old. lol.

That's some very old rhubarb you've got there pumba!! ;) It's wonderful that you have a plant with such a long family history! :D

Strawberry rhubarb pie........yummy!!!!

Pumba,

I have a question for you, I have 3 huge rhubarb plants. This year we were having a major kitchen remodel when it was time to harvest and I couldn't pick any. Now the plants look like limp noodles. If I pulled off about 1/2 of the plant do you think it would come back with new shoots this year? It hasn't sent up any seed stalks this year yet. I miss my rhubarb but I hate it with strawberries! I have a million rhubarb recipes too.
My secret--cinnamon curbs the tartness. Just a tiny amount.

Pas2 I pick my rhubarb right up till frost. I remove the tall seed shoot when it starts to grow, remove any yellow or wilted stocks and give it a good watering every now and then. It just grows and grows all summer long.

Thanks Mamu, think I will give it a going over and see what happens.
