Revival of the angry thread!

1/3 of the work force is out of work! .

HUH?????????????????????????????????????? Rate is like 7.6%. 1/3 is what happened during the depression.

We had 3 people laid off in January and I picked up some of the work they were all doing! I'm too old for this crap! Now I have to train people in India to do it over the phone! Good luck!

I don't have time to do anything at work anymore and I keep getting further and further behind!

I don't care how bean counters and economic experts define depression. We are there! Back in the 1929 the average person didn't buy stock - so only the truly wealthy were affected by the stock market crash. Back in 1929 there was no such thing as unemployment to assist people; there was no welfare system; there was no food stamp system. Therefore, it is impossible to compare the economic issues of today to the depression that began in 1929. It's like trying to compare a 1929 Ford to a 2009 Ford. No comparison!

The unemployment rate only reflects those people receiving unemployment. It does not include those that have not yet started receiving their money, nor does it reflect the amount of people that have used up their unemployment benefits.

I don't listen to talk radio, but Sean Hannity was quoted as saying about 1/3 of the American workforce not working is closer to reality. When you hear figures that Sprint/Nextel is laying off 7000, and THD is laying off 7000, and other companies close to 10,000, and it goes on and on and on, that adds up to a lot of people not working. Smithfield (the ham people) have 6 plants in the US. They are closing 2 (one here in Plant City - 700 people), and are contemplating closing a 3rd. Now, that's a FOOD processing center. Tells me people are going to be going on diets they weren't planning for.

Investors must be really scared of this stimulus package. Have you noticed the Dow is still sinking? Makes me scared.

The gov't paints whatever picture they think we want to see. I trust Hannity and Limbaugh more than I trust the gov't as far as real figures - extremely conservative though they may be!

Having a bad day? The safety nets are why we're not even close to a depression, but if it makes you feel better, then we're in one.

If you think it's bad now, wait.

I keep myself limber as to make it easier for the gov't to stick it to me! Besides, bending is good for my waist!!:rotfl:

It makes me feel better. Thank you for that!

Something tells me alcoholism in this country will be on the rise in the near future.... :sad2:

When people get laid off....they run for the bars!! Hmmmmmm....perhaps there is an economic stimulus in this somewhere???

A friend owns a liquor store -business has never been better -mostly low end stuff though.

I could be mistaken, but how do they figure just how many people are out of work ?

Do they go by how many people are filing for unemployment ? :confused3 Because if they are, then there are a WHOLE LOT more people not working than what they are figuring.

For an example, I work for myself, I pay my own tax, I have for 28 years,,there for I cannot claim unemployment,, so I can't be counted in the jobless figures,,,,can I ?

And I know A WHOLE LOT of people that are in my shoes.

okay,,not REALLY wearing my shoes,,they 'r wearing their own shoes,,but you get the picture.

The BLS calculates unemployment from surveys and if you considered yourself unemployed then you are. The sureys measure lot of things, not just unemployment. There are several categories though and I think what Deb is referring to is underemployed - if you are working at a job well below what your qualifications are.

This is definitey a depressing time we live in.

The unemployment percentages given by the news media is based on people actively receiving unemployment checks.

It does not include people who are unemployed and not receiving benefits. What they present to us in the news sounds a hell of a lot better than it actually is.

That sounds right to me.

Have it your way, but unemployment statistics are computed by the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) from the current population survey conducted by the the bureau of census.

The last census was in 2000. The next one is next year. So much for those statistics.

BTW....the Census Bureau is looking for people to work for them for the 2010 Census. Check out their website for application info. It's short-term employment, like 14 months, but the starting pay is like $12.85/hour. I had a guy come to the church office giving me brochures to post in case anyone at the church wanted a temporary job.

BTBTW: The USPS closed their processing center in Sarasota & POOF!!! There went 1200 jobs out the window. They are getting ready to close our processing center in Lakeland. It'll be closed by June 1. POOF!!! 850 jobs gone!

So, once again, we get less service for our postage increase in May...:rolleyes1

There is a 95,000 person wait list for concealed weapons permits in Florida at this moment. There are 140 tubs in Tallahassee waiting to be processed and some stores are out of ammunition. This should speak volumes.
