Last night, I had the opportunity to see the 101 Dalmatians Musical here in Miami at the Arsht Center. I went without seeing any reviews or much information about the show.
The show was pretty entertaining, but lacked a little something. And that was Disney magic. That was when I realized, this show has nothing to do with Disney. It's based on the book so the story is a little bit different than what I was used to in the Disney movie.
The sets are done very well with lots of vibrant colors and everything was very tall. This was done because the actors portraying humans were on stilts and the actors portraying dogs were walking on the floor. There were some kids in the show who portrayed the puppies who were the highlights of the show. At certain points in the show, several real dogs run through the stage, but for very brief moments. I think the show's problem is that it wants to be a major Broadway type show, but at times feels more like a childrens theater presentation.
The music was ok, but only one song really stood out at the end. The classic Cruella De Vil song was of course missing.
If you have a chance to see this in your city, be aware that it's not the Disney version and have fun.
