Reusable Cups on Wish

I think I read somewhere that an outbreak of noro on a ship was traced back to guests refilling cups at the drink stations. Not on a Disney ship but on some ship. I could be dreaming that up though.

Saliva from the cup can splash back onto the nozzle. I think it's overall a low-risk thing as long as folks keep it clean. We assume Disney keeps their machines clean and I trust they do. Sugar + moisture + the heat of the Caribbean + not clean can be an absolute breeding ground for anything under the sun. Keep your mug rinsed out and it should be fine. I like not having to constantly trot back to the drink station for a refill, so my wife and I always cruise with a ~24oz refillable cup (the starbucks cup with lid and straw style). We keep it clean of course and always are careful to not just top off drink - we rinse it out between fills.

I'm not as big of a coffee drinker anymore so the coffee cups they supply are adequate for me, I don't travel with a coffee mug anymore. Just a cup for soda/water/etc.
I highly doubt that they traced it back to someone's mug in the soda machine. And frankly, as disgusting as people are, refillable mugs are the least concerning. People eat the food from the pool deck and we all know that they didn't bother to wash their hands. I bring a mug but I also bring a small container of dish soap and a sponge. The ones that they give you in the DVC rooms. I wash mine out all the time.

I always travel with a refillable water bottle, and also a small bottle of dish soap and bottle brush - I wash it out with soap and water each evening. Now, I’m sure plenty of people don’t do that, but I’m unconcerned about bacteria that might be in my bottle even after using it for just a couple days. There might be *more* bacteria than a toilet seat, but it’s not going to be the same bacteria (to put it bluntly, I’m not pooping in my water bottle).

Yes, those type of dispensers it makes sense. That it is why it is so baffling why they want you to use their cups. The cups literally touch nothing. But everyone's gross finger has to press the button. LOL
I thought about that too! But at least I can use hand sanitzer or a wipe after pushing the button. :) I wouldn't want to wipe the lip of my cup with a clorox wipe before drinking from it though. :rotfl2:

I kind of wish they'd install the freestyle soda machines on all Disney ships (not possible I know lol). We used them at Aulani and they are great. No nozzle to touch so fill your own cup over and over and they had lots of cool flavours.

Take a clean paper cup from the dispenser. Use it to add ice to your cup, being careful to avoid contact between the paper cup and your reusable cup. Then fill the paper cup from the dispenser and pour the contents into your reusable cup, again avoiding contact with the reusable cup. Repeat until your reusable cup is full. Discard the paper cup in the garbage bin provided on deck.

In a day where the company and certain people are so woke about the environment, this is such a waste. Create trash just for the sake of creating trash. You have to be a complete idiot to fail at refilling your own cup. there is no way to impart "germs" refilling your own cup.

I take my own tumbler, I fill it with ice, I fill it with coke. I dont see how anyone can make such a simple act so challenging.

It is possible, RCCL uses them even with a chipped cup just like WDW resorts.

When I was at Aulani, the Freestyle machines were always running out of flavors, syrups, and carbonation. They're just too much work to maintain properly. I'd prefer that they stick with the regular machines.

This. It was a nightmare at Aulani last September!

Talking about refillable bottles, has anybody else seen the latest study about germs? It was addressed on the news yesterday. YUCK!!

From the NY Post:
7 days ago — A recent study from US-based waterfilterguru.com found reusable bottles can harbor 40,000 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat ...

From Treadmill reviews:
Based on the 12 water bottles we tested, we found that reusable drinking containers may be crawling with an alarming number of viable bacteria cells: more than 300,000 colony-forming units per square centimeter (CFU/sq cm).
What exactly does that mean?
To put it bluntly, drinking from the average refillable bottle can be many times worse than licking your dog’s toy.

That's why I wash my refillable mug after each use and refuse to buy one with a straw

The whole bacteria counting is a bit useless. There are so many things with high bacteria counts. For example in your bathroom, your tooth brush will be far worse than your toilet seat. Coffee machines are known for having a bio film in the water tank and water pipes. It ultimately has a lot to do with common sense on what is truly dangerous and what isn’t. There are thousands of bacteria living inside us and we are better off with them than without them!! If they are the right ones.

But I do think an important take away of this discussion is that cleaning water bottles is a smart thing to do and not a total waste of time!! :thumbsup2

That's a fair statement. Every time you breathe you inhale viruses, bacteria and microorganisms

Oh I agree, they were running out during our trip last week too. If they worked more efficiently then it might be viable but then again the ship would have to carry around all manner of syrups, too. So definitely not feasible.

As I posted earlier RCCL makes them work on most, if not all of their ships, so anything is possible.

I have read of long lines and out of order machines on RCCL. Have you had a different experience? It seems like nearly every place that has these has out of order signs regularly. I just want my Coke Zero without a fuss. So I would hope they would at least keep the regular fountains too.
