Returning item at Kohls but...

my card is at a 0 balance. I am returning a dress paid with the Kohls charge card. I have no balance on the card, so I had paid the dress off.

Customer service wants to put the $26 back on my card and therefore I would have a credit. Since I paid it off, shouldn't I be entitled to a cash refund?

Will wait to return once I hear what the norm is. Thanks

Most stores you get back how you paid for an item. That is the drawback of returing something after the bill has been paid. No one gives cash back anymore unless you have a recepit that says you paid cash for an item.
I've worked in retail for 19 years.:)

Did you ask about getting cash back, because your card balance is zero? But in general if you pay for something with a credit card then the return goes back to the card.

I agree they will only put it back on your charge or give you a merchandise credit.

It wouldn't bother me b/c I can easily spend that at Kohl's. You might want to check and see once you have the credit if they will then mail you a check. But there is nothing they can do for you in the store.

Exactly! Same exact thing happened to me but with a different store w/ their own card. Once the store credits your acct, you can use the courtesy phone and call the credit dept and request a check to be sent to you. Many store credit card issuers will send you a check automatically after 2 months if the credit stays on your acct (meaning you don't make any new purchases). You should get you check in about 10 days. good luck. :goodvibes

You could also ask for a store credit if you don't want to deal with the credit card. But you'd still have to spend the $26 at Kohls - it's a Win-Win for them.

At the store they have to put it back on the credit card because they don't know for sure that you are the owner of the account; your name may be on the plastic but the account could be in your DH's name or your DM's name, etc.

BUT...

You can call Kohl's credit card customer service and request a check for the amount of the credit. It will take a couple of weeks to get the check but you will get your money back and not be tied to spending the money at Kohl's. I've done this several times when I've had a credit on a card. It's your money so if you ask for it they have to give it to you. They may ask if you are sure if you want to do this just say yes. Easy Peasy. Really.

Paid with a CC = returns credit the CC
Paid with cash = return in cash
Paid with check = return in cash, return with home office check if $$ amount
is higher then cash kept on hand, sometimes can't be done until
a specific number of days after check was used.
Paid with GC = returns to a GC

This is how it always was done wherever I have worked. The return is always done in the way the sale was done.

getting a check back from the CC is the only way to get cash for the refund. If you plan on spending any money at kohl's in the next couple of month, then leave the credit on the card.

Sorry wish there was an easier way to get the cash back. But I think these policies have been in effect at stores for a very very long time now. Now you can walk into stores with an item and the CC that you paid with, and it'll find your receipt in the system so you don't even have to have the reciept on you.

That's happened to me before. Like another poster said, they will send you a check if you don't charge anything else.

If they put the money back on your credit card and you do not plan to use that credit card anytime in the near future, you can call your credit card company and request that the credit be refunded to you.

With most credit cards, including store cards, will only allow you to credit back to the credit card. You may want to ask if they will issue a store gift card...some stores will do this, but if this is the case, you may as well just have the credit on your card and use that, unless you planned on giving the gift card away.

This is how Macys handled it when I had a similar situation to the OP.

:)

Yeah, that.

The customer service counter at the store doesn't KNOW the status of your account balance. They can only make charges, take payments, and issue credits. Customer Service for the credit card is the one to talk to for getting your money. YOu can also check their policies. I think Children's Place only holds a credit for 2 cycles, then they cut you a check. Not sure about Kohl's as I always use up my credits.

Also be aware that they do NOT have to accept the return at all. There is no federal law and as far as I'm aware there are no states that have laws making returns mandatory.

Most states have laws that require the return policy to be posted (either via signs or on receipts, etc...), but no store is actually required to accept returns. Basically if they wanted to they could make all sales final all the time.

However, that being said that would not be a wise financial move on their part.

I'd go with what previous posters have said. Return the item and get the credit on the card and then call the credit department and have them issue you a check for it. Pain in the backside, but that's the best you probably will get.

It's a win win for the store and a win win for my MIL. She buys a present for one of kids, gets to see them open the package (which is all she cares about), they return the gift and the charge is credited to her card. They could get a gift card but they'd just give it away or let it expire because they don't shop at her two favorite stores, Kohls & JC penneys. Everyone is happy.

Kohl's policy is that if the credit balance is on your account for 90 days, you can request a check be sent and they have like 45 days to do it.
Knowing this, I returned things and having a zero balance did not pay the bill and got hit with late fees and finance charges---ON A ZERO BALANCE!!! They have the most unfriendly customer service policies of any store I shop at. Actually, I no longer shop there.
