Returning cara at different airport

I am hoping someone can help me. Does anyone know if it is more expensive to return a rental car to a different airport than the one you picked it up from?

I am looking to pick up the car in St. Pete (PIE) and return to Tampa (TPA).

Florida is a very competitive rental car market. I don't know of any of the major car rental agencies that have a drop-off fee for in-state rentals. But you're always best off checking with the company themselves so you don't get a nasty surprise.

We have picked up at Tampa and returned to Orlando several times and the prices were always right about what they would have been to return at the same airport. Just run some reservation scenarios and see what you come up with. We've done it with National, Dollar, and Alamo.

When you make your reservation indicate your pick up and drop off airports. Agencies in Floriday don't generally charge extra. You certainly may have to pay if you don't indicate your return location when you make your reservation but just return your car to another airport. You may even lose your initial rate if you try to change your reservation and list a different return location.

Rental agencies in other states, particularly if you want to rent in one state and return the car in another state, frequently have "one way rental" charges. Alternately some agencies will black out discount codes or will limit the number of free miles.

We've never had to pay extra and we've done it quite a few times. The last time was pick up in Orlando and drop off at Fort Myers. But as was said make sure you put this on your reservation to start with.

I hope so because the rates I am getting are crazy..over $600 for a minivan. I hope they come down!!
