Returning a 'used' broken product after buying another...

Do you return the broken 'frame'?

  • Yes, if less than 6 months old it is still in the 'new' and the packaging doesn't matter

  • No, that it is unethical to return it in other packaging

Returning the broken one in the new packaging is called fraud.

I would return the broken one under the terms of the return/warranty policy. 9 times out of 10, if you present your case to the right person, you'll be able to return/exchange a product without resorting to any sort of deception.

Nice. Then they re-shelve it, and some poor unsuspecting person comes along and buys it.

This JUST happened to me. Drove 60 miles round trip to get the very last of an item in the Portland area.

Got it home, and discovered it had been returned with a used water pump! Everything else was brand new, the person only switched the pump. It had rust in it, but they had re-wrapped it in the plastic so that it appeared new.

IMO, that is stealing.

I wouldn't and it wasn't faulty. After taking it out of the box it was pretty obvious it had been used.
Sorry ... didn't mean YOU ... I thought you were the OP, but of course ... you're not. Which is why I should actually write down the names of the OPs when the thread gets longer than a page. :upsidedow

:earsboy:

I had a store employee suggest I do this when one part of the light fixture I bought didn't work.

The new one was fine.

When I returned the item, they asked if it was okay so I told them the "x" part didn't work. So therefore, they would not have put it back on the shelf for someone else to buy. (This problem was not something I did -- It was like that when I removed it from the box and installed the light fixture.
But you just bought it and you would have used the original box and receipt to return it. That is not what the OP did.

It's things like this that just make me shake my head. I can't even imagine that someone thinks it's acceptable to do.

Here's another head shaker for you. Couple buys a new computer at Walmart because old one has a virus. Brings it home and sets it up. Meanwhile, friend is checking old computer to see if they can rid it of the virus. If they can fix the old one before the 14 day return period expires, couple plans to return the new computer to Walmart. (Is this Rent-a-Center or Walmart?) They insist that it doesn't cost Walmart or the manufacturer anything because Walmart just sends it back to the manufacturer. They scrub it clean and send it back to Walmart and Walmart sells it as new - so they aren't out any $$.

I would never purchase an item, use it, break it, and then return it. I agree that this is dishonest, and it's theft.

However I have in the past bought an item, had it for a while and misplaced the receipt, then opened it to use it only to find that it was defective. It was still new and not worn. I still had every right to return the item that was defective. I had simply lost the receipt. So I went, bought a replacement, and returned the defective item with the new receipt. I informed the store that it was defective so that it would not go back on the shelf.

I see no harm in that whatsoever.

Huh :confused3 I think it is wrong to say "fools" at walmart. No I do not work there but goodness, atleast they are working and contributing to society, which is more than I can say for those that are SUCKING this country dry by not carrying their own weight, so I hope that was just an expression rather than a description of your Walmart employees. ;)

As far as returning an item that you broke and then buying another one with the intent of switching. Its wrong ethically and it is actually fraud. It also causes un-necessary issues for the next consumer that buys what they think is a NEW item and wah la, its not, so THEY get stuck going back to return YOUR broken item....what a waste of energy.

If its what someone does, so be it...to each his own,,,but I don't agree its right or applaud it, its simply dishonest.

If it was defective, many stores will refund you and ship it back to the manufacturer. They don't want to lose you as a customer. Sometimes, honesty does pay.

Well, thats my two cents...you did ask :lmao:

Jeez, I was kidding about re-boxing it and returning it.

You people truly have absolutely no sense of humor. You must be total laugh-riots to be around.

It is retail theft.

As a retailer I check everything that comes back and make sure it is in re sellable condition. If I find a product that should not be in the box I would had it back and give the customer the opportunity to leave and then they would be on a list that we have that would not allow them any more returns. If they want to push it, I call the police.

At six months it's not "new" anymore, so returning it is unethical, whether you feel it was "supposed" to last longer than that or not.

Exactly; if it was right, you wouldn't try to return it as if it was the one you just purchased.

Plausible deniability. You can not do it with a computer or anything with a serial no that corresponds to that particular item. It has to be the same model, you can not buy LG tv and return it as an Emerson. So the picture frame is a bit off but lets say you bought a coffee pot and had it for 6 months and it stops working. You go to wally world and buy the same make and model clean up the old one and as long as its not looking like it was used in the war you package it up and return it. Wally world has not morals as a huge corporation but some how the little guy is supposed to. This is BS cooked up by the same *** hats who play the radio commercials that say if you down load music you are stealing and stopping the artist from making money. Boo fing Hoo. The only one who can prove you did anything is you. Shut up and its Plausible deniability. Its easy to Torrent a movie or music, and to return things that Wally world will send back to the company for credit. So who is even hurt? The company should make a better product and stop making crap in China and hoisting it upon us the consumer. I have a coffee pot made in the 60s that works like the day it was made. I don't use it because its aluminum and has some problems with the acid in coffee,, so I bought a SS one from wally world. Seems like it goes out every 6 months. As long as they make that model I will return it when it goes bad. Make decent crap and it would not happen and stop trying to make the consumer the bad guy.

OOOOOOO A zombie thread.

And it's a zombie poll first.

10 out of 10 zombies unanimously agreed. When asked the question they all answered why would we want to return your brains? So we got out of there quickly.
