I might be renting a car for a trip this weekend. I can pick the car up Saturday morning with no problem and will be able to return it Sunday. However, the location is closed on Sunday. So do I have to pay for two days (when I only need it one), or do I get to keep it for two days (when I only need it one)? Does it vary? This is Hertz if it matters.

They should price out the rental when you book it. You will have to return the car at the designated time even if the office is closed.

It is possible that a roving agent may come to the closed office for a short time to pick up the returned keys and do a cursory check of returned cars.

In general you should avoid the need to return the car to a closed office. You would have no defense against damage claims or not enough gas reported in the tank. I would suggest choosing another company.

I think it depends on the office. Some offices will allow you to return a car off-hours and you can leave the keys in a dropbox. I would call the location and ask them directly.

I have returned a rental car many times during hours when they were not opened yet. I just dropped the keys in the drop box and never had an issue.

I have returned a rental a couple of times at SFB at 5:00am and the rental counters didn't open until 9:00am. The return gets processed when the car is logged back into their system (9am) so I would be careful if the rental office doesn't open until Monday, you may be charged for 2 days. On a local 1 day rental at home, I got a warning that the rental office would be closed on the Sunday and was quoted a 2 day rental price

I would, but other locations (where more rental offices are) don't work for me for other reasons.

That was my concern, which is why I asked if someone knew what Hertz' policy is.

According to Hertz's website, "Please note that if you are returning to a location that is closed, all charges will continue to accrue until the location reopens for business."
