My son has a laptop I purchased from Costco in August 2013 - can I return it?

Laptops need to be returned within 90 days, however there may still be a warranty on the item if it's malfunctioning. You should call them and ask or look through your paperwork yourself. From Costco's website:

Return Policy - Warehouse Purchased Items

We are pleased to offer what we believe is one of the best return policies in the industry.

If you are not completely satisfied with your Costco purchase, simply return the product to any Costco warehouse. Please include the product packaging if you have it, although we do not require it for a return to be processed. We also prefer that you provide your original receipt, but if it is not available, we will do our best to process your return without it.

To keep our costs low, we must insist that the following be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund: televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, touchscreen tablets, MP3 players and cell phones.

We understand that electronic items can be complex. That’s why we offer Costco members free technical support for the lifetime of products such as TVs, computers, cameras, printers and many others purchased at Costco. In addition, we extend the manufacturer’s warranty on TVs, projectors and computers to 2 years from the date of purchase. Some exclusions apply; learn more at http://www.costco.com/concierge.html.

If you have additional questions or would like to learn more about our return policy, please visit your local Costco membership counter.

I also don't think it's right to return an item that's been used for well over a full year... If it's not working properly, take it up with the manufacturer, not Costco.

If it's a kid's computer, odds are there is a lot of "JUNK."

First: To clean house, use Disk Cleanup in Windows, which purges temp files, downloaded programs, setup logs, and the Recycle Bin, in addition to compressing many unused files so that they take up less room. Your computer will breathe a big sigh of relief after you do this. (To find Disk Cleanup, go from the Start menu to Control Panel,/System and Security/ Administrative Tools/Free up Disk Space.

Then in the same area: go from the Start menu to Control Panel,/System and Security/ Administrative Tools/Defragment your Hard Drive

Also, consider downloading and running the free version of what used to be called "Crap Cleaner." https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Finally, if your kids are like mine:

There are almost certainly multiple programs running in the background of your computer without your knowledge or permission. I am sure (I HOPE) you are using an antivirus program, but you should also:

Download a program called Malwarebytes.

www.malwarebytes.org

You only need the free version. Let the program upgrade every time it runs, to make sure it’s up to date. Once you’re all set, click the Scan tab and then Scan Now. You don’t want any of the junk found by the spyware scanners, so check all the checkboxes and click “Remove.” Do this every couple of weeks, depending on how much web surfing you’ve been doing.

There are other things you can do, but do these and see if they help.

Oh, if there is a ton of music and photos stored on the computer, take it off. Put it on a flash drive or something and then delete from the laptop. Documents don't take much space, but music and photos eat it up...

Short answer--no. Return policy on those is 90 days. You can however call the concierge line and they will do what they can to help you. I have seen situations where a member has been able to return a 90 day return policy item after contacting the concierge service.

Perhaps you can get Windows installation media for the laptop and re-install windows. It should run like the day you bought it....

i suspect the reinstallation software is already on the hard drive.

but the OP needs to backup their music/pictures/personal documents to a flash drive or external hard drive first.

if you purchase a computer from Costco and contact the manufacturer they refer you back to Costco concierge services to start resolving the issue. the concierge staff is VERY good and won't hesitate to spend as much time as possible trying to resolve it first (we've had them spend up to 2 hours on the phone walking us through initial fixes), and they don't hesitate getting the manufacturer on a 3 way call to work further on the issue. if it's not resolved then Costco has a process through which the computer is sent in for repair or replacement.

we spend a bit more to purchase our computers through Costco just because of their concierge program and the extended warranty-to not take advantage of it (or their replacement guarantee for the extra year) because we've used a computer for less than the period of coverage makes no sense.

Before you contact Costco I would absolutely go through the steps Ranger111 outlined for you. Teens aren't necessarily prudent with what sites they visit and what they're downloading.

I can return my computer because it's running slow?! Awesome! Mine's 5 years old, and doesn't run nearly as fast as a brand new one. Time to return it! :rolleyes2

As Ranger said, there's probably junk on it. The more you store on your computer, and the more background programs run, the slower it goes.

It's also possible there's a virus on it. If you don't have an antivirus on it, you should consider getting one.

Also, computers are kind of like pets: 1.5 human years can equal 5 or more computer years, depending on the model. Technology evolves very quickly. What seems lightning fast today, seems super slow next week.
