Oh I would definitely go to one of those if you are interested. Community Ed classes are general safe.

There is some discussion on that in the Bogleheads forum. Apparently the community colleges use local businesses, that are not allowed to 'advertise' by stating their business in the catalog. So you are getting a salesman anyway.

I get a lot of those mailings: I throw them out. I would rather buy my own dinner without having to listen to someone's sales pitch, and that's all they are. They want to sell you a financial product.

I would do as previous posters advise and start reading the Bogleheads forum. There are a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful posters who should answer any questions you have. If you still want to attend a dinner, that's fine, but don't go in without knowing anything or you won't know if you are being given poor advice.

Sorry about that, try googling "bogleheads", the forum should come up. The specific thread on seminars is under Personal Finance, and has been active the past few days. I found it fascinating because (a) the Bogleheads are very financially savvy, and (b) DH keeps getting those postcards. I don't--maybe because I'm younger? He gets invitations to visit retirement communities, too--just the place we want to live with an 11yo!

The site DID appear to be having issues this morning--I couldn't get in, either. I tried after I read your post here. All is fine now. I find the site very interesting and enlightening.
