Resume attached to application?

Is it necessary to attach a resume to the application when applying?

If the system requests one, then yes.
A resume is the only way for the system to know anything about you and it is what will be screened when deciding to move you forward.

The system will also probably request (but not require) a cover letter. Write one anyways. That is the way to introduce yourself to the recruiter before actually speaking to them. I know several people who have seen the word 'optional', chose not to do it, and never moved past submission.

It's important to remember that you are applying to an official internship program, and to treat this as if you were applying to a professional job

For the College Program? No. They do not even look at them if submitted. This is stated on their website. Both of my children were accepted and they did not attach resumes.

I agree that they're not required, and that most people don't bother uploading them, but sometimes they do get looked at if they are submitted. During one of my application seasons, my phone interviewer brought up a topic that was not mentioned on my application, only on my resume - she would have had no way of knowing I'd done that thing if she hadn't read it.

I imagine it depends on what you are applying for. If it's DCP, then no resume is needed. I'm pretty sure that a computer program reads those applications, so a resume will go unnoticed. If it's for a PI, I have no idea. I don't personally know anyone that has applied for one.
But, I do know many who have applied, and been accepted into DCP. None of them attached a resume to their application. You get to put yourself forward when you do the phone interview.
