Double booking usually refers to booking two different restaurants during an overlapping timeframe. Sometimes the system lets them slip through the crack, although I would think that it would be harder if you use two separate MDE accounts and emails.

Beaches and Cream can't keep up with current demand. I had a "watch" on it leading up to our vacation in May and snagged one the day before. Every table was full the entire time we were there, too.

I was surprised how small Beaches and Cream was on my last WDW trip (first B&C trip!). It is tiny!

I'm a planner, but my brother is not. He hates the idea of being tied down to a TS meal reservation. I usually make one or two reservations for our typical stay (7-10 days), and the rest we just go with the flow. We tend to go in September, when the crowds are lower and free dining is common. That being said, we've had the most availability this year! We usually have luck making reservations through the app the day of! Sci-Fi is tricky - I have availability on 6 out of our 9 days for lunch and 1 out of 9 for dinner! Best of luck and keep checking - even when you get there! We've waited when they had no reservations and never had to wait longer than 25 minutes. Enjoy your vacation!

We weren't even booked at 180 days. Nor have we ever been. Went the same time last year and got everything. One year, we booked 10 days ahead and got everything. This year is off. And it is not just because of FD.

The Yacht Club also goes back and forth between showing availability and being completely booked.

you don't have to be booked at a disney resort 180 days out to make dining reservations 180 days out. if I ahve even and inkling I might go to WDW in 180 days, I could make ADRs for that day. and then wake up the next day and do the same.

the only difference in being booked at a WDW resort is that, at your 180 day mark from your room reservation, you can make ADR's for that day plus 10.

many people, anticipating free dining, evenif they weren't booked at the resorts, went through the painstaking processing af reserving ADR's each day, at 180 days out. even if they weren't sure they were going. and often booking more than one reservation per day, knowing they have plenty time to cancel (as long as the reservations don't overlap, or aren't too close together in time)

and I would guess many locals book at the 180 day mark , "just in case" knowing that any poplualr place where they want to eat will be booked because of the free dining.

I would keep checking, esp at the 45 day mark, when people cancel their trip if they can't go.. or keep really tryinig that week, as people have 24 hours to cancel those they won't use without getting charged a fee. which is probably why that one year, you booked 10 days out and were able to get everything

And no, They do not hold things up for walk ups.

maybe yak and yeti isn't disney owned. but one year I couldn't get an ADR for the time I wanted. we wanted to see the nemo show and then leave time between the end of that and our lunch for our vile, awful cigarette break (can you tell I have quit smoking since then? lol yay me!) anyway, we had to skip it cause there was no time... when we got to yak and yeti, there were planety tables (yes, I know some sectons weren't open yet) I asked and they told me "oh, we always hold some tables back for walk ins" .
one place we surprisingly have had little trouble waking in is Prime time.. 3 times. granted, it is just 2 of us, but 3 times we walked up and were seated within 20 minutes (once in fall, once in april, once in august.)

I think a big part of the problem is that many people who didn't make multiple reservations before make them now. You have to book where you will eat 90 days before your trip. At that time you can't book your fast passes and the park hours are not set in stone yet.

ITA . the OP says it is not because of "free" dining. and she is both wrong and right. it is due to "free" dining, but some things have changed. how do you know when you want to eat in 180 days. when you don't kno at what time you will get your fast passes? or what time the park will open/close? this, added to the email reminders have led to more and more people than ever to book ADR's ahead of time, and multiple ADR's at that.

and a PP made a great point. with the park hopper stipulation being added to the "free" dining package this year, people have seen their dining options opened. as in "hmmm, we should use the hopper, we paid for it.. let's book one ADR at Mk, and one a couple hours later at epcot, and see as we get closer to that date what we might do.. they don't have to cancel until 24 hours before.

I was never aware of that but could totally see how it happened. I remember as a kid in 1989 and being in WDW with my parents and aunt/uncle. My aunt asked if we wanted to go eat lunch in the top of the castle. We declined. Point was, back then you could just walk in and eat.

Actually, we ate there at that time and you had to hurry back to the castle and get ressies for a time 'that day' to eat - we did that more than once. There was a window in the little alcove where they would give out the times.

Back then it wasn't a character meal at lunch. I know when we went in 2004 breakfast was the only character meal, and the advice was to synchronize your clocks with the one in the naval observatory to increase your odds of getting a reservation. They really were gone that fast. The addition of character meals at lunch and dinner made a big difference.

In the late 80's Cinderella 'did' appear during the meals (can't remember if the Prince did) because we have pictures of our 4 year old ds almost swooning when Cinderella was kissing him - wore that kiss with pride all day. He was totally smitten with the Princesses.

This! We have eaten ice cream there for years and it was a relatively 'little known' oasis until the past few years. It is indeed 'very' tiny with maybe 8 (?) small tables and 6 (?) booths. Can't understand why they ever started the reservation system there as it would be next to impossible to get in. Dh & I always get our sundaes there at off times and sit at the counter - those are not reserved.

I have no idea how it was in the 80's.

But it did occur to me I wasn't entirely accurate with my description. When I said it wasn't a character meal (early 2000's is the time frame I recall) I meant that there were no characters in the dining room going from table to table taking photos and signing autographs. But Cinderella did appear in the lobby for at least dinner. For some time the Fairy Godmother came out at dinner and the mice danced around but they didn't stop for photos. During that time it was the breakfast (with other princesses circulating) that booked up in a nanosecond. The other meals just weren't as big a deal.

keep checking even while you are there. i am guilty of this year double booking things because we were unsure what we wanted (booked some on my dads MDE name and some on mine to double book) but then we will release it a week prior or while we are there. last year we tried to get something really hard last minute and it was easy since a lot of people release ressies the week of.

Queen Cut or King Cut ( I may have been a kid but I had an adult appetite) I do remember the Fairy Godmother and the Mice much later on could have been late 90's or early 2000's

I remember eating there in that era and being disappointed in the food, enough so that I never had any desire to go back. Maybe I just got them on a bad day?

Yeah you could be right about Cinderella...I am gonna dig through some old photos...I do remember running there very early to make the reservation....not sure about breakfast either


As far as retaurants being filled up I am finding the same thing with the exception of a few for the first week in Nov. this year

As so many others have said and it's free dining PLUS increased attendance. And what I like to call the 180 day panic. There are so many more people now who book right away, thanks to the Dining Plan. Pre-dining plan it wasn't ever really an issue. We booked most of our ADRs on site while we were there. We've gone to WDW more times than I can count and it's never been more competitive for us to get reservations than it is now. Even if you didn't have issues during free dining before, word spreads. More people probably take advantage of it now.

Wow, they were deleting double bookings? So if you had two ADRs for the same place within one trip, something like that? That seems nuts to me!

Sure does seem nuts! The least they could do is send an email saying choose to delete one, or they will delete one by a certain date. ...esp since those of us holding on to them are waiting on disney to finalize hours/CP narrators/Fast Pass choices....we're not holding on to them bc we just like it...I would love to know for sure what I was doing right now! And....I got up with the alarm at the 6:00 a.m. time to get on the computer and do it.

My family is traveling from September 25 to October 3. A lot of the restaurants that we would like to go to seem to be full. I don't mean on just one day or for one meal. I mean completely! And ones that I have never seen full like Sci-Fi Diner. I have tried different days, times, and number in the party. Nothing. Am I missing something?

I'm definitely seeing heavier booking of restaurants this trip than any past trip.

I'm going during a not free dining time, so it is definitely not due to free dining... If I pull up random days in the MK, I cannot find any availability - breakfast, lunch, or dinner - for any restaurant in the MK for our party size. Crazy! In years past we could find common things like Tony's, the Plaza, and CP pretty much all day long. Only BOG and CRT were booked up.

We booked a while back, so I think we're good, but I keep looking over the availability now and have to scratch my head. I suspect folks are hoarding more than ever before due to the growing perception that ressies are rare and need to be hoarded. As ppl feel scared that other ppl are doing it, they book more to protect themselves. I'd guess close to half of the ressies that are currently booked are things people have no intention of keeping.

And then of course you've got constantly increasing attendance which might play in, but I'm guessing the solid booking is more the die-hard crowd overbooking than additional casual guests going.

We are book for Sept 19-29 and at 180 days there was a very limited restaurant selection. I had believed many people had pre booked trips expecting a larger free dining offer. As that limited availability of free dining has been long booked up I had expected more restaurants to become available and that hasn't been the case. So far this is the worst selection we have ever had. I realize that some restaurants are down for referb and others are more popular because of changes to character list like Akershus, first year i couldn't get in there ever. I just hope this doesn't mean very large crowds in the parks. We have done September trips mainly to avoids the larger crowds at other times of year. I've been checking several times everyday since booking and the choices are slim to none. Wouldn't want to be a first timer expecting to walk up to restaurants and get in.

Keep checking...especially within a week and up to the day before you want to book the restaurant for...they seem to open up.

Also the scarcity at restaurants that were not previously so busy can be blamed on social media and the internet. I'm reading here about restaurants I'd never of thought of before - particularly the ones at the resorts. (Like Beaches and Cream, for an example!) I imagine many people are seeing new options open to them just because they were not aware of them before.
