Restaurant Recommendation for kids

My family's first full day at WDW will be my nephew's first birthday. I need recommendations on kid friendly restaurants that aren't character meals. We want to avoid him screaming through his birthday lunch or dinner if he happens to be scared of the characters. We are staying at the Contemporary so will have monorail access and will be in the MK that day. We will have 5 adults, a 5yr old and a 4 yr old in addition to the 1 yr old. Thanks!

Nearly every restaurant in WDW is kid friendly so you could go just about anywhere and receive a warm welcome. However, based-off the information you've provided I'm thinking having dinner at Whispering Canyon Cafe at the WL or 'Ohana in the Poly would be ideal. I've also heard very good things about Trails End in Fort Wilderness. All of them would be easy to access from your resort or the MK and would be ideal for a family like yours.

Kona Cafe at the Poly would also be a nice option. The food was excellent. The restaurant is a bit loud which was great for us with 4 kids under 7.

I agree that Ohana at the Poly would be a nice b-day dinner. The adults can relax and the kids can dance and do the coconut races. Imho WCC is just too loud and your experience depends on the wait staff.

Ohana would be my 1st choice as well. My girls had fun at Planet Hollywood. It is loud and the food is average, but they were up and dancing with the music.

If you are looking for someplace

A little more quiet: In the magic kingdom there is the Plaza restaurant. It's nice and out of the way. The food there is very good. The Kids menu includes food from cheese burgers, grilled cheese, turkey sandwich, peanut butter and jelly, as well as grilled chicken. These meals come with an appetizer, one beverage, and one desert. You can make a reservation, or (we've done this before) walk right up. There is usually no wait time if you just show up. The inside of the plaza is on the small side! Again if you are looking for a little more peace and quiet the plaza is a good place to go.

(The Plaza is not to be confused with the Crystal Palace. It's a totally different place :])

I agree with Ohana as a fun location without characters in the evening.

Prior to tonight, I would have also suggested WCC (having never been there before, but really liking the look of its menu and the general theme) but we had what I'd term our first and only disappointing WDW meal there tonight. Not terrible, just very blah. Server was blah, the antics seemed artificial and forced, and the food, while plentiful, was nothing special. Not birthday memory caliber in my limited experience and opinion, only.

Our favorite loud and fun place is the Biergarten in Epcot. A fun oompah band that the kids can dance to, great ambiance, great food (including some standard fare for the less adventurous eater, if needed), and overall a guaranteed home run for us every time. Not as convenient to the Contemporary as Ohana, but it would be my choice if you have park hoppers and want to make the trek over to Epcot for dinner.
