Restaurant etiquite

At Sit down restaurants..yes. Please take off your hat. I was raised that hats indoors was rude and disrespectful. Carry a comb to fix your hair after hat removal.

last week, the days I had my hat on during our park days, we went to eat and I took my hat off and fixed my ponytail in the bathroom....I felt weird with it on......it obstructed my view of the complete restaurant as well!

I agree that I would rather see a person's hat on their head than their greasy, matted, tangled and sweaty hair while I eat. And why are people so concerned about hats when I have seen far worse in WDW?...butt cracks hanging out of the tops of shorts (not just on the teen girls, either, gentlemen!), bra straps galore (when did it become OK to not even bother trying to hide them?), and all the offensive t-shirts! I'd say baseball hats are a minor manners issue compared to all the others...

I'll keep mine on, thank you.

I notice at WDW and DL that lots of people are wearing goofy hats, princess tiaras, and mickey ears at resturants, and it that goes that baseball caps do too. Except in sit down and/or signature places.

I've never been to WDW with my DH, but he goes to Disneyland with me sometimes (I bribe him with a Monty Cristo). He always wears a cap in the park and he keeps it on during our meals too. He keeps his hat on in some other places outside of DL (more fast foody than sit down) but that could have more to do with his slowly disapearing hair folicles than anything else. If the cap is on noone will know!

Honestly unless its a "nice" restaurant or at one of the resorts I don't see a problem with someone keeping it on. Unless their attire is revealing, smelly, or has offensive language or images its none of my business what they are or aren't wearing.

I learned that a few years ago with my sister. She had just started chemo and wasn't feeling the physical effects yet, but her hair had started to come out a lot. She figured it was going to be quite a while until she would have much of an appetite so she tossed on a hat and we headed for Red Lobster. (She loved those cheddar biscuits)

As we were eating a couple was walking out past us and the woman made some comment to my sister to the effect of having no manners, ruining everyone's meal, and hats are inappropriate. The look on that woman's face as my sister took off her hat to reveal her patchy, balding head was priceless. I can still hear my sisters reply that she thought it would have been more inappropriate to leave trails of hair throughout the restaurant.

I can't understand how someone can be affected across a room by an article of clothing. Though personally, I wouldn't wear a hat. -My ears always stick out.:rotfl2: Don't care if anyone else is though.

DH and DS both remove hats during dining, be it Peco's Bill's or Le Cellier. If I had a hat on - it would be a more formal style made of straw - appropriate to leave on for dining. AK has a great selection of - the name brand is escaping me - straw hats. I think they look a lot nicer on woman than a baseball cap, plus they breath.

We also carry face cloths into the parks with us to clean up before eating, are we the only ones?? Everyone has their own in a baggy with their name on it.

pirate:I think you should take it off inside. Just what I was taught-women have always been told it's ok to keep it on, but I never do.
I was at the Alamo recently and everyone has to take off their hats because it's a church and I saw a few people not go in. That was sad.

I must not have been raised right, because my mom sported her baseball cap at several table service meals.

This thread reminds me of an episode of the Sopranos where they are eating at a nice restaurant and a guy walks in wearing a baseball cap. Tony goes over and says, "They don't serve hot dogs here, take the hat off". The guy finally did, then Tony sends the guy and his girl a bottle of champagne to their table. Guess it's a sign of respect.

Luckily I don't wear hats so I don't have to worry about it. But if you want to while you're in WDW, I won't give you a second glance. ;)

The wearing of hats and the proper time to do so is just another one of Man's endless quests to control what people do. Its even more ridiculous than a talking mouse, yet supposed to be taken seriously. That having been said, people look like wierdos wearing them in fancy restaurants.

:thumbsup2

Especially the talking mouse part! :lmao:

Wearing a hat comes from ancient codes of honor. When you entered the place where your commander was, you removed your helmet to show trust and respect. The salute was to show that you were not carrying your weapon ready to use. Like a handshake - that's why we use the right hand, the majority of people are right-handed - the hand you hold your weapon in.

The removal of head-gear shows that you trust and respect those in that confined area not to strike at your head - and they can see your eyes.

Today, a baseball cap, frontways, in a shaded restaurant, means your face is not very easy to see. It's like talking on your cellphone while checking out at a store - shows no respect to the person assisting you.

This.

It's the same reason we remove our hats/caps when a prayer is offered, when the national anthem is played, or when a funeral procession passes. It shows respect. My grandfather taught me to remove my cap at the dinner table. To this day, I always remove my cap, no matter where I eat. I take it off when I say grace, it doesn't hurt to leave it off while I eat.

Maybe it's because I'm younger, :confused3but to me a hat is a hat

My son is 9. He takes his cap off, too. It's never too early - or too late - to exercise good manners. By being more respectful of the people around you, you will feel their respect for you. Just try it some time. You'll see. ;)

In the scenario of a theme-park restaurant, I would not take my cap off. I think people might be more offended by the way my hair would look on a hot August evening - all sweaty, kinky and matted after being under a ball cap all day.

I promise that if you'll take off your hat, I won't look at your hair. Anyone who does is inconsequential, because they don't get it.

That being said, for everyone that thinks it's poor manners to wear one - are you okay with tank tops, swim tops, flip flops and daisy duke shorts?

Flip-flops while you're in the park? Not a problem. The rest? Absolutely not, not anywhere but the pool.

And you there! You kids! Get off my lawn!! (We really need a Grumpy smilie.) ;)
