I recently saw on a fb group for Seniors, that people were trying to find rooms that had aids such as bars in the bathroom, showers instead of bathtubs, beds that are not too high etc.

Perhaps we could share information of which resorts/rooms have such items. Might help to have this information when making room reservations.

Unfortunately, I don't have any info to share on this subject. It's been a while since our last visit.

Tks!

Pretty much every hotel (not talking about airBnB, etc.) in the United States is required to provide accessible rooms. The ADA also requires that hotels provide a sufficient description of what the accessible features of a hotel are, take accessible rooms out of inventory at the time they are reserved (to prevent double booking). And a range of other activities.

If you go to touring plans room views you can pick your Disney resort and scroll down to accessibility. It will show you the room numbers of all the accessible rooms.

For those that may not be aware, if Accessible features are a necessity for your resort stay, one should click the "Accessible Rooms" icon below while searching and booking. Doing so will result in numerous accessible options and is the only way to guaranty an accessible room. Disney's descriptions and detail are pretty good, and often DISers (usually the great folks who frequent the disABILITIES board) can provide further direct experience.

Just request an accessible room...
The irony is that many years ago, I received an accessible room without asking several times, and each time I was somewhat embarrassed and often complained about "not needing one". Yet, now that I'm in my 70s, I really appreciate it and have friends who complain about not being able to get up into the regular height beds. The bars in the bathroom help a great deal giving me confidence. And at both BCV and Kidani on my next trip, I've asked for a HA room since I now use an ECV (a big adjustment with tears).

We always stay at the Castle Inn & Suites when we got to Disneyland and get one of their ADA rooms. They have one that has a roll-in shower that we had the last time we went. The only thing I did not like about the room was that there was no closet space. We have always enjoyed staying at the Castle. Everyone is very nice and they charge my husband's rented ECV overnight in their lobby.

Pop Century is our go to resort. Last trip I told my daughters that I wanted to start asking for the shower only rooms as I sometimes have a hard time stepping over into the tub. And also think they should had more safety bars for getting in & out of the tubs in the regular rooms. Towel bars are about the only ones I have seen & I wouldn't think they would give much support. Never thought about asking for an accessible room as I wouldn't want to take one that someone else needed more than me.

Don't feel bad about needing it though if you need those as it sounds like you do. I understand though. We are getting a HA room next time we go for my husband and choose the tub one vs. the roll-in shower because he *can* step over as long as there are the grab bars (and hoping it isn't too high of a step) as I didn't want to take a room away from someone who needs the roll-in shower. We are staying at the cabins this time around so we will see how it works out.

I would suggest to everyone that you take a rubber tub mat with you when you travel. Several years back, my husband took a terrible fall in a hotel bathroom because the bottom of the tub was very slippery. He wound up in ICU because of a brain bleed.

Good idea. I never would have thought of that.

Tks!

Oh yes, that's definitely important! Some of the hotels we visit have them available on request, but not all, and it's not something we want to have to call and wait for. We have put a bath towel in the tub when there wasn't another option.

May sound strange, I bring a small can of bath cleaner to spray down the tub or shower floor after I shower. My sunscreen lotion and hair conditioner make the tub slick. It is a habit I also do at home to avoid falls.

I am DVC, and I hate that all the refurbs are using the glass doors on the tubs vs a shower curtain. I have visions of falling and slicing myself up on those tracks. Not sure if they figure the glass door may prevent someone from falling in a way the curtain never could, but if you have the momentum I think those doors might also give out.
