Resort Upgrades

I have read that people will be booked at one hotel a moderate one and when they check-in they are upgraded to a deluxe. How does this happen?

Basically, the moderate is overbooked, so they end up having to offer accommodations elsewhere.

It's rare, and there is nothing that you can do to affect it. As mousemommy1 said, it's generally an overbooking thing on the part of Disney.

Or because plumbing goes boom or there are bedbugs or similar. When a room has to be taken out of commission without warning, they end up having to shift guests. Sometimes, it's an invisible shift within the resort. Sometimes it is not.

Never pin a lot of hope on a miraculous upgrade.

That kind of upgrade is extraordinarily rare. A complimentary upgrade within a resort - say, from standard to club level - is highly unusual. An upgrade to an entirely different resort is about as rare as hen's teeth, and would be due to a completely overbooked resort, or some kind of maintenance situation that affects a significant number of rooms. Or part of a resort being shut down for a refurb.

Remember, there are something like 30,000 rooms on Disney property. Thousands of people checking in every day. All but a very tiny percentage of those people get exactly the room category they booked. The handful of reports of resort upgrades you read about on these boards is a very small drop in the bucket.

I have been upgraded from Coronado to Wilderness Lodge. The room we booked was given away to some huge convention that requested more rooms last minute. When we checked in, we were told we were moved to the Wilderness Lodge (we had a 15 night stay planned, so it was a nice win). Coronado Springs transported us and our luggage over to Wilderness.

Our party was moved due to Disney overbooking.
