so we are going to Disney with my parents. Now my in-laws live in Florida. They were talking about coming up for the day on our break day to hang out with us/go to dinner and just visit with the kids. Are they allowed to park at the resort and visit? Resort hop with us? The original plan was they were going to do a park with us and meet us there but other life things are happening (they have to come home twice this summer for family things) that if they can just save money and not get a park ticket it would help.
So just wondering what the parking at the resort rules were when you are visiting a guest of the resort

Yes, that's just fine, and they'll be allowed to park at your resort and visit with you there. There's no charge for self-parking for day visitors at Disney resorts.

(I should mention that at busy times of year, the deluxes that are close to theme parks can sometimes get a little restrictive about visitor parking. But as long as they tell the guard at the parking lot entrance that they're visiting their grandchildren who are staying at the resort, and give your name, there shouldn't be a problem.)
