I notice a lot of people on the boards tend to plan trips that involve stays at multiple resorts and mix between classes of resorts (a couple of nights at a moderate/deluxe and the balance of the trip at a value.)

Wondering what kind of complications there are in booking such a trip? Do you have to work over the phone with WDW or with a travel agent? Is it possible to book online? What about getting bags from point A to point B - is it a headache?

Seems like a bit of a common thing, but just have never been able to wrap my head around the details of getting it done!

I do it all the time. You can book it online, or use a TA, or just call Disney and book through them. It doesn't matter. Most people try to stay at the lesser resort first, then finish with the more upscale resort.
It can be time consuming though. You have to unpack for each stay. Then, the day of your move to the next resort, you have to pack everything up, and move it to the new resort. Disney will move you bags for you, but it isn't a quick thing......you don't see your bags again until well past 5pm!!! I like to head to a park first thing the morning of my move, spend a few hours there, then take the bus back to the 'new' resort, and get checked in.

I don't recommend switching resorts for those who are on their first or second trip to WDW though. As I said, it's time consuming, and you're possibly without a room for almost an entire day....sure, sometimes you can get into a room early, but that's not always the case.

We love the idea of split stays, but to be honest it is pretty easy for us to switch from one resort to another, because we always have a rental car. We are also not bothered by waiting for our room at the second resort, because we leave our bags with bell services and wait in the parks! The biggest inconvenience for us is booking 2 separate trips as packages, but all in all not a big deal.
