What do you do when you first enter you room regarding the comforters? Resorts typically only wash their comforters monthly, so how do you handle that with the kids. Do you instantly take them off the bed or turn them down? Do you spray them is disinfectant?

i always fold down the bed spread when we get tin the room and i totally remove it befor going to sleep.

Throw it in a corner and block access with a chair. The backsides are no cleaner than the tops, so just folding it down doesn't put my mind at ease!

We take it off and fold it and put in the corner. Problem is that you have to do it everyday upon returning to a made up room. I doubt that the blankets are washed after every visit either so that is another issue.

I leave the bedspread on but put a bath towel or two on top for the kids.

I'm embarrassed to admit I had no clue about the comforters until I found this board a few months ago. I am sure there were a few times my 5 month old was on that comforter.

This time I am packing a can of lysol and going to try not to be too paranoid about it. I also thought about using the "spilled something on the comforter" plea to maybe get fresh ones (but who knows if those will even be clean, right).

I never knew this....now I am very UGH...I don't even know the word to use!

I know exactly how you feel. There was a huge thread on one of the other forums (resorts probably) about this and I was so grossed out. I think I liked it better when I was ignorant to the issue. :confused3

Why can't you just call and ask Mousekeeping for new comforters as soon as you check into the room? It doesn't seem like a big deal... That's what I do when we travel and I've never had a problem.

Still no guarantee that the ones they bring you have been freshly laundered :confused3

My 10 year old KNOWS she can't touch the bed til I take the comforters off -
and it is the FIRST thing I do at ANY hotel!
DS and DD are too little to knowbetter so I just get to it before they do! :wizard:

I do nothing. The kids can jump on them, roll around on them. 5 trips to WDW and numerous trips to other hotels and they've never gotten sick.

Some germs are good. Too much sterilizing is bad.

I agree Oggie - but something about what the 'honeymooning couple' that might have been there the week before might have done if ya know what I mean!

I totally agree that kids NEED to be exposed to germs. However, it's not necessarily the germs I'm worried about (as Patty alluded to :earseek: )

Well, if everyone took of the comforters cause they're afraid of the honeymoon germs, then the comforters should be fairly clean! I'd worry more about the blankets and the sheets, cause the honeymooners would've taken off the comforters too! :rotfl:

Nice logic, huh? Anyway, I usually give the bed a quick glance. If it looks OK, then it's OK. When it's time for bed, I do fold it down.

Wow, that's gross! Is that really true? We own at a resort in Vermont (Smugglers' Notch) that changes the comforters after each person checks out. (And yes, they get washed.) I just assumed all resorts did this!!

Well, it is a little gross, but when I think of all the times I have stayed in hotels and was ignorant to this issue..... I don't know. We will be at Vistana villages next week, I may just say something about allergies and request new bedding, or if everything really looks o.k. I may just try to forget about it! My kids have stayed at many, many hotels and I never removed any of the bedding before, I bet they are washed more often than we think. :sunny:

No, I believe that they have been freshly laundered. Have you ever heard of any hotel - that isn't run down with boarded-up windows - having housekeeping store folded dirty bedspreads/comforters? I don't think so. At nicer hotels, you can often request NEW bedspreads as well.

But if you're still worried - then just ask.

After you arrive, ask housekeeping to give you a "complete linen change". Do tip the housekeeper for this extra request.

I don't do anything either. Maybe I'm naive but I really don't think that much is happening on top of the covers. Now underneath, that's another story ;) . As long as my DD isn't licking the thing I don't really give it much thought. We've gone on trips all over the country and she's never gotten sick.
