Resort collapse due to sink hole

I hope your husband came out unscathed. What a scary thing to have happen. Is the area stable now?

OMG that is scary. I am glad no one was hurt. I am thinking of all the belongings that were lost what if you had a passport, or clothes or a computer etc. I know these things are replacable but if you only had a few days of vacation it could seriously hurt. Again this is a lesser concern but one none the less.

What were the reasons for the sinkhole? Too much weight or loss of top soil or water or was it because it was in an area supposedly swampland?

This is what I've heard about the central Florida area, this is not common in the northern and southern areas of the state...

Science of sinkholes: Why central Florida seems so unstable
John Roach and Nidhi Subbaraman NBC News

..."Sinkholes like the two seen this year in Florida form when slightly acidic groundwater dissolves limestone or similar rock that lies beneath the soil creating a large void or cavities. When the overlying ceiling can no longer support the weight of the soil and whatever is on top of it, the earth collapses into the cavity.

I'm thinking the saturation of the ground makes the sand layer heavier, and this probably triggered the collapse of the sand into the cave," Draper told NBC News.

Sinkholes like these usually take a few hours to form, and he expects this one to get a bit larger before it stops. .

..The geology under central Florida makes that section of the state slightly more vulnerable to the sinkholes, Draper said. Though the two recent events have brought them into the spotlight, sinkholes are a natural phenomenon and have been collapsing for "thousands of years."

This is really weird, but this morning I was laying in bed wondering if there had ever been a sink hole in Disney. I am not going to say the rest of what I was thinking, but I do think weird things in the middle of the night. This is very scarey. We have been considering moving to Florida, but then I hear stuff like this.

Now don't know if this true or not - but since heard it on one of those tours think it is.

the lake in Epcot - World showcase is because of a sink whole.

so sorry this happened - but has been said because of the limestone it happens. Ala has this problem too.

It doesn't fix things of course but they were working hard to take care of everyone. People were being fed, local resorts are putting people up, lost tickets are getting comped, etc.

For those questioning about sinkholes....they are common to Florida, but I'm born and raised here and this is the first one I've actually seen other than the tv. It can happen anywhere and you can't really avoid it so to worth worrying over. I do feel so bad for everyone though! At least they got out.

Looks like its true! According to the memoir by Epcot's chief construction supervisor, the Epcot lagoon is a sinkhole.

"... smack in the center of the 600 acres (construction site for EPCOT Center) a huge sinkhole (was discovered). Sinkholes are geological formations that can be as old as 15 million to 25 million year. This one had been waiting for us quite a while, and its boundaries were not fixed -- regularly, cars and trucks that we thought had been on solid ground would start to sink and would have to be rescued by a tow-truck. The sinkhole was full of organic silt and peat, and the sand underneath went down as far as 300 feet. Nothing solid could be built on it, since the underlying sand could not support the weight of a building. The most logical thing to do with the largest sinkhole of all (at this construction site) was to dig it deeper and make into the lagoon around which the World Showcase pavilions would be situated."

Well, my friend and me and four children were in staying in villa 105. We were evacuated just before midnight, five hours after checking in. The villa next door (104) collapsed. It was a terrifying experience. We left the property at 3am to find somewhere to sleep as soon as we were permitted to leave the resort. We were escorted by security to retrieve our belongings at 5:00 yesterday evening. The resort assigned us to villa 108 but we declined. The kids were upset, news vans everywhere, emergency vehicles and a collapsed bldg was right there... Not a comforting sight. After being very persistent, we were move to Mystic Dunes. I asked if moving to this property was an option. So, thank God we are safe and nobody was hurt. It was a chaotic ordeal, a vacation we will never forget.

OMG cheerky!!! You were there?!?!? :crazy2:

I am so glad that you and your family and your friend are all safe. And I don't blame you one bit for choosing to move resorts.....I would have done exactly the same thing. I couldn't sleep at night on the same property after something like that happening.

Wishing all of you a peaceful remainder of your vacation. Hopefully the rest will be full of pixie dust and fun times pixiedust: .

don't think anyone would blame you for leaving - that is just scarey!!!

glad you and your family are safe and got all your stuff.

so sorry this happened to you - are your kids having nightmares about it. (Hey if thru RCI - would have demanded a DVC resort) - so your request was a nice one and very reasonable in the situation.
