There is many great photos that i have taken with my point and shoot camera, then saved them on my computer, and then saved to photobucket.

But then i want to put them either as my avatar or my photos underneath my posts, but they are to big, how can i resize them??????

Thanks Adabob

can I also ask...does resizing them lose the quality?

Well that is an interesting question...

Downsizing does throw away pixels, but depending on the display size one might not be able to see the difference.

Example in printing
Most photo labs print 4x6 photos at around 300dpi, which equal 2.16 megapixels. So even if the camera originally shot 12 megapixels it will be downsized to 2.16mp by the machine b4 printing with no visible loss of quality.

Just always remember to back up the original full sized image and you should be ok, cuz you can never reproduce pixels that get discarded.

Resizing smaller always loses quality. Re-resizing loses even more quality.

Always keep your original. If/when you need another smaller picture, make another copy of your original. Then you can crop all you want but do just one resize operation down to the final picture dimensions you want.

Well, you're obviously losing pixels because you're shrinking the original photo. There are a couple other factors, too...

Resampling algorithm. There are several, Irfanview views Lanczos at the best. Photoshop uses variations of bicubic. The worst is plain "resizing" rather than "resampling" - resizing just tosses pixels, with no attempt to recreate the original curves and such, and you end up with terrible jagged lines.

Jpg compression. If you save your jpg at, say, 60% quality, you'll have a smaller file but it'll look a lot worse than one saved at 80% quality. It's a trade-off between image quality and file size. I usually save mine at 85% for web use and 90-100% for home use. If I'm really concerned about quality, I'll save in a lossless format like png.

I have a question along the same lines. I have a shot taken with my 30D. Is there a way to take a crop and then enlarge the crop to make a 5x7 or 8x10 print? I have tried a couple of times, but the enlarged crop is relatively blurry and noisy. Thanks in advance for your guidance!
