Reserve first, then rent?

I am interested in learning more about renting DVC points. I am very unfamiliar with how it all works. Do you make a reservation first, and then try to find someone to rent you the points, or is it the other way around? What if you rent points, but then are unable to get a reservation. I guess I am a little confused! Please help me understand the process. Thanks!

We just recently rented for the first time.

I was wanting to take my kids at the end of July (next week) so I started checking the rent/trade boards and got registered. Next I found someone saying that they had points to rent. I contacted them, told them the dates I was interested in and they (the DVC member) called and checked availability. After we agreed upon dates, type of accomodations (studio, 1 BDR, etc) and resort, the DVC member made the reservation and we made payment arrangements.

It was very easy, convenient and worked out very well for us. After staying at Wilderness Lodge and Contemporary this summer I was sooo excited to be able to stay at a vacation club!!! Until I can get my husband to break, I guess renting will have to be the way to go. I hope this has helped.

Thanks for the response. Yes, this was very helpful! How far in advance do you need to rent points? I see that you only just rented points for this month. If I wait until September or so for next January (2006), will there still be points available? I won't know which week I will be able to go until the end of September, due to my husband's work schedule.

Also, can you rent DVC points to stay at Resorts that aren't part of Disney Vacation Club?

To the first point above, the earlier you can rent, the more likely it will be you can get the exact location (resort) and size of room you most desire.

To the second point; a member can make a ressie via what's called the Disney Collection for selected other WDW resorts ( AKL, CR, YC, POR all come to mind) -- however, this is much more costly in the number of points required, and therefore will be disportionately more expense in your rental charge. You'd have to look at the specifics, but renting points (or using them if your a member for this purpose) may well cost as much (or possibly more when compared to any available discounts) as just paying cash for the non DVC resort rooms.

You can rent points to stay at non-DVC resorts, but it may wind up costing more than cash through Disney. Non-DVC resorts take a LOT of points. As far as January, I would wait until you are sure you have your vacation dates firm...but you may not be able to book the exact DVC resort you want to stay at. OKW and SSR would probably have the most availability because of their size, VWL and DCV are often booked early because of location, Stormalong Bay, etc. But it never hurts to ask the DVC member to try to book thoswe resorts if they are your choice.

Book with a DVC member you feel comfortable with, look at the post counts and how they respond to others here in their posts. Remember that the DVC always has control of the ressie, but also stands to loose points if you don't fulfil your end of the contract...so there is a fair amount of trust required on both sides of the transaction.
