Reservations? We don't need no stinking reservations, we do it TODD'S way! COMPLETE

Holy cow!! California Grill???:worship: Maybe we are all missing something with the 180 day thing. :confused3.

Sorry it was so hot. I have been there when the heat index was way up there and it can definitely make an impact on your enjoyment level.

Yeah that was a total shock, I never expected her to come back with that one! THe heat completely zapped all energy that I had!

Being a dessert lover I am in love with your cup cake (am so glad Oreo won your coin toss) and the bread pudding from Boatwright's!

Wow at getting a ressie at CG!! I am wondering whether to just cancel our reservations for our trip and go where the wind takes us!! :rotfl:

Both desserts were awesome, so glad we had them. I say if you have reservations keep them! :lmao: It really wasnt bad not sticking to a schedule and being as hot as it was we were able to just wing it and not feel guilty about it

Loving your report! We are doing the QSDP this August, so no concrete plans here, either. It sounds great to be able to go where you want when you want....Also, I showed my DS the picture of the oreo cupcake and he nearly keeled over. He is now planning that for his breakfast one morning. On vacation, that's ok, right?

I think it is much easier to do a no plan trip in the summer when it is hot and maybe not as busy. Your DH will love that cupcake...I wish I had one right now!

Your pizza at POFQ sounds like it was better then your meal at Fulton's, there's something seriously wrong with that.

I agree! :thumbsup2

Boatwright's looks yummy! I've never been there, but I think I've had an ADR there on two seperate trips now, but it's always one I cancel, because it's out of the way, and I just never feel like going there since it didn't get the best reviews before now. But actually now I am considering staying at either PO or AKL for my 30th b-day, which one would you choose? I know you've stayed at both.

If I had it on a schedule it would probably be one I cancel too but after eating there and having such a quiet relaxing time I would make sure to go back

Todd needs to have worse luck with getting reservations! No one should be able to be that lucky, it's just makes their egos too big. :rotfl: But I am glad you got to eat at CA Grill. How does he not remember restaurant names though? My mom went with me to Disney in 2007, and if I mention restaurants to her, she can remember what it is.

Honey his ego was big before he scored Cali Grill!

Wow, I've been off my computer for just 2 days and already you're on page 9 of another fun filled dining report. It's been a long time since I did Disney without ADRs, but Todd restores my faith that you don't starve without them. I wonder if it was just a LUCKY fluke? I enjoyed the Boatright's review. It's been many years since I have eaten there and the meal looked really great. Can't wait to see your CG review and if you tried the sushi!

Hi babe! See what happens when you wander away from the Dis? :lmao: I was away from it for over a week and have not begun to catch up yet! You will def not starve if you dont have reservations, that is for sure! I thought it was lucky too but when I was checking my phone just for kicks there was always someplace available. Try to get back to Boatwrights sometime, it was excellent. Cali Grill coming up!

I:banana: am joining in. What I have read so far is great!! I have always wanted to go without the ADR's but with 2 DS's I am afraid of not getting in to a place they really want. I love the cooler your friend sent Todd where did they order it? I would love to have one ordered for my DS who is turning 9 when we go in August. I look forward to reading more. Thanks.:cool1:

Maryann :surfweb:

Hi Maryann! Thanks for reading along! Kathy ordered it from the Disney Florist and they put it in the room for us.

Hi Nicki! I have read most of your past dining reports but I don't think I've ever seen you in process. Woo hoo! I'm so glad I made it for this one. :goodvibes

I'm glad the no-ADR plan is working out for Todd since it's his birthday. But I know it must be driving you crazy. I would be the same way. Fortunately for me, my DH still accepts most of what I say as the Disney-gospel. I hope to keep it that way for as long as possible!

Hope CG was good. It is one of my favorites!

So happy you made it! I think from this point on my role as Disney know it all is shot to heck!

I'm pretty sure we won't make it to Boatwright's any time soon, unless we stay at POFQ sometime soon, which I would love to do now that its been rehabbed. The Pecos Bill taco salad looks yummy! I had pretty good cheese fries there last year. And that cupcake looks divine. I actually like cupcakes that haven't been too gussied up so they get super sweet. Blech.

I agree with you, the cupcakes from Starring Rolls are too foo foo for me and I dont think I would enjoy one

I have to say that I've been going back and forth about California Grill. I know you didn't have the best experience there last time, but Karin and Tom still did. And it still stands out in my mind as the single best meal I've had at Disneyworld. So I can't wait to hear what you say about it this time. I'd just go ahead and make an ADR, except that you have to secure it with a cc, and I don't want to do that. What to do...what to do...

Our first meal there was fab, the second one was drab but wait until you hear about the third!

Its funny about the ADR situation, actually. I didn't start to really plan for this trip until April 1, way inside the 180 day window. I was worried about what I'd be able to get. I have to say that I have had absolutely zero problems getting what I want every time. And I'm still able to mess with things, at only above forty-five days out. :confused3 So, I wonder how necessary it is that everyone freaks out about making their ADRs?

I am still messing with my Oct and having no trouble whatsoever!

I hear you on the heat! It was MISERABLY hot. We've decided that will be our last time going during the summer months.

I'm :rotfl2: at Todd getting a next day ressie for CG!!!! I hope y'all enjoyed it as much as we did on this last trip!

OMG it was miserable most days! I think we ate there the night before you guys

Hiya, Nicki!! :wave2: Geez, guess it's time to admit that I skimmed:scared1: over on Kathys PTR and missed the link to this one!:guilty: Darn, I hate being so late...but...it's been great lazy morning reading! ::yes::

Hi hon! I admit, sometimes I skim over there because Marv and Tim just cause so much drama that I have to by pass it:lmao: just kidding, I love those 2 nuts!!

So glad you enjoyed FQ! It's always been one of my fave mods - so pretty and quaint - although hate the masks in the food court - scary!! The pics of the new decor doesn't look great to me. Does it happen to look better in person? Any pics of your room view?? Those drinks from FQ pool bar look incredible! Never thought of asking for coconut rum in a pina colada! Your dink looks fantastic and think I'm gonna have to try one next trip!!

Yes the masks are a bit freaky and I have to sit so I dont face that big huge one that looks like its gonna eat me! The rooms are so much better than the pictures are, trust me. My room view was of the courtyard between building 6 but I didnt take any pictures. Todd comes up with this hairbrained idea one day to make it with coconut rum and it has been that way for him ever since, I hope you like it that way too

Ya know, I like the way Tood thinks sometimes ;) - for 25 years we never made a PS/ADR, but after free dining started it became impossible to walk in...and early December has gotten waay too popular...though I might try to convince Rosie to go free and easy for at least part of our birthday celebrations in 2012!:thumbsup2 :yay:

I think you should try it...while it was a bit stressful on me at times it was also very freeing to not be the leader of the trip

MK is the only park I like for morning EMH - it's just incredible to walk in to a practically empty MK. BUT an extra early opening without EMH is the absolute best! Your days remind me of the August trips when my kids were young - hit the park early, back to the resort to swim for the afternoon, then back at a park for the evening. Just too gosh awful hot to be at the parks midday!!

It was a perfect MK day, we had a blast!

Nine Dragons - haven't been back after an awful meal. Glad yours was mostly delicious!

I didnt think we would ever go back there after our terrible meal but I am very glad we did

I've always had a regular custard eclair in France too..would not like chocolate filling. Guess Todd gets there on the wrong eclair day?!?:rotfl:

This is wild because in all the years and all the trips he has never had plain custard in it.

Fultons - that's really awful! So sorry! Haven't eaten there since it was Empress Lily!
Boatwrights - really glad you enjoyed it! We tried it once, yrs ago, when staying at POR - it was horrid! Dirty floors dirty tables, awful food!
Kona - a definite on Rosie's list for our birthday celebration. We're thinking we'll share a Big Kahuna.:thumbsup2

Can't wait for the next update!! :goodvibes

My next update is coming right up!

I was curious so just tried a little experiment and checked to see what might be open for dinner tonight. WOW! For a holiday weekend, I am shocked. Times varied but there was a wide variety including 50's Primetime, Brown Derby, Citricos, Flying Fish, Jiko, Bistro, La Hacienda, Rose and Crown. But still not sure I have the "courage" to go without ANY ADRs!

See! That is exactly what I was doing the weeks before our trip and while on the trip and tons of stuff was open! He turned me into a believer!

I can't believe you got a next day reservation for California Grill! :rotfl2: Too awesome!!! I was starting to think about a few lunch reservations for August but maybe I'll wait and see what we feel like doing. :confused3 We are a family of 5 which I'm sure is harder than 2 but still. This is so inspiring!!! :worship:
We go to Disney often enough that the sky won't fall if we miss Chef Mickey on one of our trips.
I did find that Signature Restaurants are somewhat easier to get later in the game (except probably Cinderella, maybe?). We were in Disney in January with a party of 8 and had no trouble getting California Grill or Narcoosee's at the 4 month mark (more or less).

Amanda

Hi Amanda! I could not believe it either! I think you are right, 5 is alot harder to get into places than 2. Signatures places do seem to have more availability

So I'm a little behind but we just got back from our trip too and I had to go right back to work so I'm finally caught up! I can't wait to hear about your meal at California Grill. Our last meal there was almost 2 years ago now and we haven't been back because the food was just way too salty. I'm considering making a reservation for our trip in October but I'm not sure if I can do it!

Cali Grill coming right up...and yes the food at many places has been too salty lately, that is why we do not do dinner buffets anymore

MickeyNicki.....as always, it's SO much fun reading about yours and Todd's Excellent Adventures in Disney!! thanks for the great time reading ! :cool1: (and for the awesome pics!)

Lets start our Epcot morning shall we?

Since we got there so early we had to stand around for a bit and it was getting hot. As soon as rope drop was done we did the Soarin thing, the Land, Living Seas etc and then over to Test Track....we walked on to everything!

The heat was getting bad and Todd said he needed to rest so we went to the Ellen Universe of Energy thing which I LOVE! THere were just 7 of us on this ride that holds 500 people.

We sat way in the back and Todd laid down on the bench and instantly fell asleep :scared1: I swear that boy can sleep anywhere! When it was over he said he needed an energy drink to pep up so we went to the ice cream place by the big fountain and he had a Monster. I was feeling a bit drained too and I had a few sicky sweet sips..doesnt take much to get me revived and running again.

It was getting time for lunch and we started in Mexico and made it to China where Todd had (what else) egg rolls and a Peach Snap! frozen cocktail.

DisneyMay062.jpg

DisneyMay066.jpg

He said the egg rolls were good and I will take his word for it as I dont like them...never have and never will. If you can believe this I didnt have any of the Peach Snap! because I was too hot and just wanted water. Anything too sweet or hot wasnt cutting it for me.

Over to Germany where the smell of the caramel was inticing but we didnt have lunch yet so guess who went a brat and kraut? Well it sure wasnt me! I didnt understand why he would want something with more cabbage in it but it must be a guy thing

DisneyMay067.jpg

Here is where I lost it...I was getting so hot and so nauseated that all I wanted to do was lie down and drink water, and I went through about 6 bottles already. The smell of the kraut had me spinning and the only thing I wanted to do was get back to the resort. I was just soooo hot. The stupid Monster energy drink was making me so sick...and I just had a few sips.

I thought I would walk a bit ahead and it would pass but Todd noticed I was getting paler (which is weird because I am so tan so how would he know?) so he got me a melon kakigori. THis was perfect because it was icy cold and a bit of sugar did help me out a bit.

DisneyMay051.jpg

He thought I needed lunch but I wasnt hungry at all so we decided to go back to the resort and jump in the pool. We were the only ones on the bus and it was so nice and cold in there. When we got back to the resort I was feeling 100% better and I was a bit hungry so I decided to get a sandwich at the food court.

The muffaletta was awesome, I had it hot and ate just 1/4 of it and Todd had the rest...it was excellent and the pasta salad that went with it was the best part. I could eat this all day long! Do you see all the pickles...well they are not for me!

DisneyMay052.jpg

Todd had some beignets but we just dont get what the fuss is about, they are pretty nasty

DisneyMay068.jpg

Instead of pool time we decided to go back to the room and crank the ac as cold as I could get it and just take naps. After all, we needed our rest for MK until 3am and Cali Grill dinner!

We both had a great nap and a shower helped us feel like new people. Todd was worried about me (even though I was fine!) and didnt want me to get overheated (it was still 96 at 4pm) so instead of messing around with buses or driving he decided a taxi was a better idea. Cost us $15 with tip and it took us right to the front door of the CR.

We checked in early and went up the magic elevator. I was hoping for a window seat, we had one, but it was way in the rear of the restaurant and had a view of Epcot. Didnt matter anyways because the blinds were down until the last 20 minutes of our meal...good thing too because the sun was just beating down on the restaurant. The entire time we were there the tables to the sides of us were empty.

Ryan was our server and he was INCREDIBLE! You could not ask for a better server. He sat down on the bench next to us and chatted away and told us everything we needed to know about the menu. Of course I told him it was Todd's b-day and he immediately went to get Mickey Pixie Dust and scatter it everywhere!

We both had ice tea, no booze tonight. Ryan brought over the bread and it was excellent! Nice and warm and the butter was super soft and cream with the sea salt on top.

DisneyMay071.jpg

Todd had, surprise surprise, a caesar salad. The portion was huge and could have easily been a meal on its own. He loved it and ate almost the entire thing.

DisneyMay072.jpg

I had the soup...and DH said

"For someone that doesnt want hot stuff you get the soup???"

Me: Dont you know you are not supposed to question a lady?

Todd: Who are you kidding?

This was a grilled corn soup with Maine lobster, portobello mushrooms and white truffle oil and it was in a huge bowl and it was to die for! I loved it and Todd loved it and finished it off for me. I have to thank Ryan for suggesting it to me otherwise I would have skipped over it.

DisneyMay073.jpg

Todd ordered the filet with garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus and the sauce on the side. The BBQ sauce is so thick and so smokey strong that it can completely ruin the dish for him. He said the filet was huge and super tender, full of flavor and the asparagus was cooked perfect but what really set the dish off was the mashed potatoes. He ate every single bite .

DisneyMay075.jpg

Ryan suggested the raviolis to me and my hubby piped up that I couldnt eat them because I have this new lactose thing and I told him no worries I would take a Dairy Ease (sometimes they work and sometimes they dont, tonight they worked!). My poor guy always worrying about me....and he said that I had too much pasta on this trip and I needed to get the pork. The thought of eating pork and then touring MK was not making me happy...plus I am Italian, did he forget this little fact???

These are artichoke and Pleasant Ridge Reserve Cheese Raviolis with spinach, black garlic and parmesan foam. So my dish arrives and looks like soap :rotfl: I try a bit of the foam and it is the most blow your mind out of bounds taste of parm cheese you will ever have in your life. There were 4 raviolis and they were filled with artichoke and cheese and there were 4 baby grilled artichokes that were so delish and the black garlic was intense and wonderful. I could eat this every single day! Even Todd was in love with the dish and said that Ryan picked right again.

DisneyMay074.jpg

We were both full and happy and in need of real coffee. Of course we had to get some type of dessert, we decided to split one. Since Ryan was on a roll Todd told him to pick our dessert and surprise us. Ryan loved this idea and he came back with the bananas and caramel. Crispy phyllo squares layered with banana, caramel, marscapone mousse and caramelized bananas. This was sooo good and not too heavy or sweet.

DisneyMay080.jpg

California Grill has completely redeemed itself and it was one heck of a meal. We are both looking forward to dining there again in Oct...I cannot wait! The food was just perfect and the service was even more so.

After our relaxing 2 hour meal it was time to get to MK. As I head towards the doors to walk the sidewalk I hear:

"Where are you going?"

Me: To MK why?

Todd: Monorail is this way...what you think I'm gonna walk after that meal???

Great review of CG. We are going to try it for the first time on our upcoming trip and I cannot wait.

So glad to hear about your meal at Cali Grille! DS and I loved our meal there in '08 and are really looking forward to DH trying it this year. That pasta looks amazing! Guessing it won't still be on the menu in August but you never know!

I tried the banana dessert last time we were there and totally give it 2 thumbs up :thumbsup2:thumbsup2. Loved it great flavor and not heavy at all!

Dontcha just love when that happens!!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the eggrolls here - and I don't usually even like the things! Must be because I'm in Disney.:confused3 That Peach Snap looks delicious - where do you find that? I rarely take the time to have anything as yummy as that, but I sure as heck want one next visit!

Over to Germany where the smell of the caramel was inticing but we didnt have lunch yet so guess who went a brat and kraut? Well it sure wasnt me! I didnt understand why he would want something with more cabbage in it but it must be a guy thing

WHAT, WHAT????? My dear Nicki, beignets are the BEST!!! OMG - sooo yummy!!!! I've read of others who didn't like these yummy fried dough things, but from you?! Sad, so very sad.:sad2:

I'm sorry you felt so sick - that Florida heat is brutal. Glad the kakigori helped. In 50 visits have never had one of those - next time we're there in the warm weather will have to try one. :thumbsup2

Great update!! LOVE your TR's! TY!:goodvibes

We were also blown away by CG on this trip! I'm so glad y'all a great meal too!

After that review, Rosie and I may add CG to our birthday trip list! ::yes:: I eat VERY plain food, but am off to check out the menu right now!!

What a nice dinner!! :)

MickeyNicki.....as always, it's SO much fun reading about yours and Todd's Excellent Adventures in Disney!! thanks for the great time reading ! :cool1: (and for the awesome pics!)

I am so glad you are enjoying them!

Wasnt it delish!

Now I love fried dough or elephant ears as some call them and I love funnel cake but I didnt like the beignets...maybe they needed something like a raspberry sauce or something ;)

The heat was just kicking my tush and I didnt want to do a thing. THe night was fine though and very comfortable so I could go all night long. The kakigori was perfect for that hot day

I am so happy you like the reviews! :lovestruc

We were also blown away by CG on this trip! I'm so glad y'all a great meal too!

Wasnt it to die for? I could not remember having such a wonderful experience...loved it and cannot wait to go back! Megan (Tinkerbelle_325) ate there the same week and she said it was excellent too

After that review, Rosie and I may add CG to our birthday trip list! ::yes:: I eat VERY plain food, but am off to check out the menu right now!!

What a nice dinner!! :)

Oh you should, do it now! The menu on WDW site is the correct one. If you are into plain food that is not a problem, go for what Todd had...its just steak and potatoes :rotfl: For years he has been scared of signature places because they sound too fancy but it really is just regular food.

We partied hard at MK and made it to midnight and then called it quits. We didnt have any snacks because we were so full from dinner. The weather was so much better at night and it was cool with a little breeze...on the people mover we discussed our plans for the next day.

Todd's brilliant idea was breakfast at the resort (oy), have a pool and pool bar day (yay!) then head to the park. I knew we would be at HS because the Star Wars weekend was over and not too crowded, EMH had the place open until 1am and we were to meet up with TigerKat and her husband Johnny (sadly we missed them because Todd was on a conference call and it went over longer than expected...no worries we will be drinking F&W time with them in Oct :thumbsup2)

The lingering question was what are we going to do for dinner? You know I have to constantly bring this up to him right?

Me: So what is the plan for dinner?

Todd: Well you made me miss out on fried chicken the other night so I want to go to 50's PT

Me: Me?! I made you miss out on fried chicken? How did I do that genius?

Todd: Well you told me it was on the menu and then it wasnt

Me: So what, I texted Disney and told them to change it before we got there?

Todd: Hey I dont know what you do. Well I am getting chicken tomorrow night

Me: We will never get in

Todd: Sure we will, dont sweat the small stuff

Me: Dude, your are 6'1...I sweat the BIG stuff!

We slept in and didnt make it to the food court until 9am and it was slamming packed! Talk about apples and oranges from the previous 2 mornings! It really looked worse than it was, we sailed through the lines and found a table fast.

I was in need of protein so I had a side of scrambled eggs and a croissant. The portion of eggs was ridiculous...could have fed 4 people! Soft, buttery and creamy..we had no problem sharing. I had a croissant to go with it and it was much better this morning, very fresh and moist.

DisneyMay093.jpg

Todd went for oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar and a side of cheese danish :cool1: He loved it...I thought the oatmeal looked like wallpaper paste but to each his own.

DisneyMay094.jpg

From there we found our spot at the pool and relaxed the day away with a couple of these bad boys.

I had a few Caribbean Coolers...watch it these suckers are strong! Skyy pineapple vodka, Midori melon liqueur and lemonade. I added a squeeze of lime to it. The second one I asked for a little more lemonade and a little less vodka.

DisneyMay083.jpg

Todd had himself a few drinks but changed it from pina coladas to a very refreshing Tangerine Dream with Finlandia tangerine vodka blended with orange puree. This is a dangerous drink because it tasted like frozen orange juice.

DisneyMay084.jpg

We dipped in the pool and I read a book and he slept and we had the most fun day ever. The drinks were great but I was getting tipsy fast and it was after 1 so it was time for lunch. Back to the POFQ CS but this time it was completely empty.

I knew I wanted to try that shrimp po boy..I had my eye on it since the day we checked in and I have heard some great things about it on the DIS.

They have pork, beef with french fries, chicken and shrimp po boys and they come with pasta salad or chips.

DisneyMay004.jpg

THey are huge and loaded with shrimp so we decided to share one and get an extra pasta salad, drinking those foo foo drinks can fill you up pretty well. Everything is made fresh to order. The pasta salad was fantastic as usual and the shrimp were excellent but the bread was hard and not that great. What I did was go back up to the topping bar and get lettuce, tomatoes, onions and more of that creole sauce and put the shrimp on top and made a salad out of it, we just pitched the bread....it was perfect :worship:

Have you noticed that Todd's pickle pile is getting larger by the day????

DisneyMay085.jpg

DisneyMay086.jpg

After lunch it was time to shower and get moving to HS!

I'm always looking for Fried Chicken when at Disney, but the best to be found is at Trails End after 4. ::yes:: They even have a to go box - it's sooo much fun to get the to go box and sit in the rocking chairs in the porch at Trails End, relaxing and people watching. :thumbsup2

What a fabulous day you had - that orange thingy sure looks good!!

....and talk about a cliffhanger!!!! Come on, come on...did Todd get his PT fried chicken? :yay:

(um...did he leave any pickles for other guests?!:rotfl: )

After that review, Rosie and I may add CG to our birthday trip list! ::yes:: I eat VERY plain food, but am off to check out the menu right now!!

What a nice dinner!! :)

Nicki you are giving Christine way to many ideas !!She has us staying at 4 different resorts, doing HDD, CP, Mickeys Christmas Party, Keys to the kingdom, at least 10 differedt restaurants and all in 4 1/2 days !!!:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

YES!!!! :rotfl:And we still have 18 mos to plan our 65th celebration!:dance3:

Get out the violins.... My last visit to Disney will have been November 2010 by the time we go in December 2012. We need more days!!!!! That's the longest I'll ever been away.

WHAT, WHAT????? My dear Nicki, beignets are the BEST!!! OMG - sooo yummy!!!! I've read of others who didn't like these yummy fried dough things, but from you?! Sad, so very sad.:sad2:

NICKI,
I am VERY happy that you had a great meal at CG! And guess what ...... we know Ryan as well! :rotfl2: BUT, you should have asked for RON!!!!!!!!!!! :lmao:

Love, love, love your food choices ...... the ravioli sound delish, just what I would have wanted. Can't wait to go back again.

I just booked my excursions/dining for our third cruise - guess it's update time tonight! ;) :thumbsup2

Nicki - am absolutely LOVING your food report! :lovestruc

It's making me chuckle so much too - Todd is like some kind of Jedi being able to get into all these places with no ADRs!

CG sounds amazing - we love eating here too. And that oreo cupcake from Main Street Bakery made me drool.....
