Dumb Question Time!

What does reservation status mean and where exactly can these points be used?

TIA

It means the points were originally used for a non-DVC reservation which was subsequently cancelled. For example, they may have been used to book a cruise, a stay at the GF, something from the Adventurer Collection or the something from the Concierge Collection.

Once you book something outside of the DVC resorts, the points become "reservation" points and cannot later be used to book a stay at any of the DVC resorts.

When you use points for one of the other Collections, DVC gives the equivalent number of nights/points to CRO to rent for cash. DVC uses the cash to pay for the non-DVC option and also lets CRO keep some of the cash to compensate them for acting as the TA. So that's why you can't later use those same points for a DVC resort - the time has already been used.

So if you cancel the original "outside" reservation, you must reuse the reservation points for something in one of the "Collections". (The DCL and non-DVC WDW resorts are part of the Disney Collection). The only exception is that you cannot use reservation points for things in the the World Passport Collection / II exchange - that's because DVC has to deposit a DVC stay for the trade. And you already used the time to pay for your original/cancelled reservation. DVC just has the cash (or got it back when you cancelled).

Best wishes -

Points gain "reservation" status when they are used for any non-DVC option - including DCL, non-DVC WDW resorts, Concierge Collection or Adventurer Collection, DL resorts and DLP resorts.

If a reservation for one of these options is later cancelled, the points retain "reservation" status and are returned to the member's account. They can then be used ONLY for a non-DVC option and cannot be used at a DVC resort any longer.

Once any non-DVC reservation is made those points are turned over to CRO to be used for cash reservations at a DVC resort to "pay" for the non-DVC option (it's not really that simple and is actually more of an accounting transaction as no money will change hands for any of the Disney Collection options - but that's the easiest way to quickly describe the methodology). Even though the reservation may have been cancelled, the points have already been commited to CRO and are unretrievable for use at DVC resorts.

That's not a dumb question, Scratch (which still sounds like a guy's name to me - not sure why...).

That's a very important question that many members using points for the various collections don't understand until they find out the hard way. Thanks to CarolMN and others for providing the answer we all need to know.

LOL! You must play pool!

Thanks everybody! Now I understand. So they can be used as long as not a DVC Resort.
