Reservation question

Ok so I was just reading "Disney on a Dime" and I have a question.
According to this book, if I was to book through Central Reservation instead of through WDTC, I will only pay the amount of 1 nights stay at select hotel, and the balance is not due until check in. They also state that you have up until 5 days before check to canceal or make chages to your reservation without penalty. If I was to canceal within the 5 days I would be required to pay Disney the cost of one nights stay.
I am just wondering if anyone has ever done this before and if this is true why on earth wouldn't the WDTC have the same policy?
For me this would give me over 4 months to pay for the entire trip rather then 2 and a half months. Big difference in my house.

a reservation through WDTC will be a "package" instead of a room only reservation. Packages have different rules/restrictions. If you want to have the dining plan, then you must also add in tickets of some kind and it will be a package. If you are planning on buying tickets separately, and not participating in the dining plan, then a room only reservation will be fine.

room only reservations require a 1 night deposit immediately, with the balance due at checkin.

packages have a $200 deposit immediately, and must be paid in full 45 days in advance.

That is sort of dated info.there used to be 2 different phone numbers.One for CRo , the other for WDTC.Now both answer the same number.But the PP is correct.Room only ressies require one night deposit within 14 days of booking.Pkg ressies are a $200 deposit due immediately( so they say, they gave me 10 days).The cancellation policies /penalties also vary.

Oh I see. I thought the free dinning was given with the amount of nights you book. I didn't realize you need to book a package deal.
That was my concern. Thank you for your help.
