Reservation change procedure?

I currently have a reservation for a 2 BDR lock off at Vero Beach in June. If it turns out that I only need a one bedroom, what is the procedure for making the change?
1.Can I just change my reservation freeing up a studio?
-or-
2. Can I make a reservation for the one bedroom and then cancel the 2 BDR?
-or-
3. Must I first cancel the 2 BDR and take the chance that someone can get the room I just cancelled before I can get my one bedroom request in?

My daughter has asked a friend to go but we don't know if her friend can go yet. I surely don't want to take the chance of losing the room, we've been planning the trip for over a year. I had rather have the three of us in a 2 BDR than taking the chance of losing the room.

You will have to cancel the two bedroom and try to book a one bedroom. if you have enough points, you can book the one bedroom before you cancel the two bedroom. But if you don't have enough points, you will have to cancel first and try to get the one bedroom after you have cancelled.
