We've bought both direct from
DVC and resale. There is no difference in how you are treated, and never has been. You will hear rumors that changes could happen, but those are usually started by DVC timeshare salesmen and hopefully we all take their comments with a generous helping of salt!
The two big differences are time and cost.
If you purchase direct, the process is simple and quick. You can make reservations as soon as you make your deposit, and the whole process is over very quickly. However, you will pay $120 per point for all of the WDW resorts I believe. On Dec 1, BLT goes up to $130. Sure, they will offer "incentives" off that price, but look where the price point is!
Beware of the "free points" sales ploy (polite for "lie"). DVC timeshare salesmen will often tell you are getting "free" points. Although there have been actual situations where some truly free points were given in the past, that is not true today. They're just giving you
the points you are buying and telling you you're getting something for nothing. You're not.
With resale, the big advantage is that you save a
BUNCH of money. For example, if you purchase SSR or OKW resale, you're going to be paying about
HALF what DVC would charge you for the same points. At other resorts, the savings will be 20-40%. BLT, for example is currently listing for about $100 and selling in the low- to mid-$90's.
Resale does take some time -- I'd plan on 6-8 weeks from offer to closed and "in the system" and able to make reservations. However, a timeshare purchase is not something anyone should rush into, and a delay like that is certainly worth it if you're paying
half price.
