I wanted to know if anyone requests certain items for the room from the Special Needs(?) Dept.???Due to the fact that we are booked in a "regular" room and not a W/C accessible room, I wanted to know what I should request for the room for my DD. We are bringing our own transfer chair for the shower but I want to know what else I should be requesting ? TIA for any info.

I don't have any tips. Without an accessible room I wouldn't be able to get IN the bathroom, so having equipment in there wouldn't help if I couldn't get to it. Have you requested measurements of the doorways for the room/bathroom? I know they can provide a shower bench and "bedboard" but other than that I think you would need to provide any other equipment such a hoyer lift, if needed yourself or delivered from a medical supply company. Good luck!---Kathy

It's hard to say without knowing what your situation is. We rented a hospital bed for DS. We requested extra bedding for the bed and extra sheets to use as draw sheets as well as extra towels. After we arrived we had to ask that some of the furniture be removed from the room. The hotel staff was very helpful. Just take a look around home and see what you may need at the hotel and call and ask. Disability services is really good about answering questions.

Thanks. My concern is the bathroom for my DD. As I said I am bringing my own transfer bench for her but I am worried about the toilet.

If you are worried about the toilet then I'd definitely call and ask what, if anything, can be provided to make the toilet "work" for your daughter. They should be able to tell you if there are any grab bars, the distance between the sink/tub/toilet for transfers, the height of the toilet, etc. I've heard of some people bringing one of the commode chairs and placing it over the toilet to raise the height of the toilet seat and provide bars to hold onto, but that won't work if your daughter needs to do a lateral transfer and can't get over the bars. Have you spoken with special services yet? I would have them provide the shower bench vs. bringing it unless it's specialized and/or you are driving and thus have room for it.---Kathy

Yes we are driving, so I figured my DD is already use to that shower bench so I will bring my own. We are loading up our minivan and packing it to the top, so if anyone sees a van driving down I-95 with 3 people looking like this :crowded: it will be us.

My daughter has physical and mental disabilities but she can walk around the room to get to the bathroom with no problem, her wheelchair is for distance use. However she does have difficulty getting up and down from a low seat and would never be able to step into a tub so I will call special services to see what they can provide for us. Do you know their phone number or where I can find it?
Thanks for the info! :thumbsup2

I no longer have the direct line to special services but you can call the regular DRC number and ask to be transferred. They will try to say they'll pass on the information but it's like the game where things are passed along verbally and get totally lost in the translation. I would ask them to measure the toilet seat to see how tall it is and then ask if they can provide a raised toilet seat. I know they have these on DCL so I'd think they would in the resort, but we all know it's best not to assume, lol. When is your trip planned? I know how much you are looking forward to this and hopefully the concierge staff will make it magical for you.---Kathy

Thanks I will be sure to call them. We are going Jan.28th-Feb.3rd. I am keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out with the room for my daughter. She REALLY wanted to stay at the POLY and we REALLY wanted to stay CL. As long as my daughter is happy than I am happy :thumbsup2

I think the thing you need is to to be very clear in your own mind about what you need. If you can be clear, you can find out what they have.
If your daughter needs a raised seat toilet and can't step over the side of the tub, then you may need a handicapped accessible room with a roll in shower. I'm not sure how you planned to use her shower seat, if you daughter can't step over the side of a tub, is she able to transfer to the shower seat (with her legs outside the tub) and then swing her legs into the bathtub? If she can, you might be OK with a regualr room and some arrangement for the toilet.

The transfer bench we are bringing goes outside the tub and then she swings her legs over and we slide the seat. She can do that fine, the thing that I am concerned about is her being able to get on and off the toilet if it is low and has no hand bars. I will definitly request a raised toilet seat for her.
